| It seems like my friends who can run easily 6 miles, 3-4 times a week tend to maintain weight throughout the year. I feel like 3-4 hours of running per week seems to really keep weight off. |

It does keep weight off, but like any type of exercise, your body eventually gets used to it and you have to mix things up if weight loss is your goal. You can do this with bursts of speed, varying paces, etc.
So, take your example of 6 miles three times a week. Say you've been doing that for 10 years and you're finally starting to gain weight. You could switch one workout to a shorter but faster run. Or, you could decide to train for a half marathon. Cut two of the runs to 4 miles, but turn the other one into a really long run -- working up to 10 or 12 miles. |
| I'm guess I'm using it as weight management because I eat whatever I want and maintain a steady weight. I usually jog 4 miles 4x per week, plus walking and generally being active the other days. |

I run 5.5-6 miles a least 3x a week (though i shoot for 4), and I pretty much eat/ drink what I want and maintain my weight.

| Hard to weed out the correlation from the causation. I try to walk or run for about 30 minutes during lunchtime. It doesn't burn that many calories directly, but it really reduces my hunger at lunch and my desire to snack in the afternoon. The indirect calorie reduction is a lot more than the direct. |

Minimum is 9 miles (3 miles 3x week). That’s the bare minimum and that’s coupled with gym workouts.
But even working out 6 days a week, I can see weight start to creep up if I’m eating above maintenance, like over the holidays. Running and the gym are great tools for weight maintenance, but not the end all be all. |

You can’t outrun a bad diet. I don’t know any women who are thin who eats a crappy diet. Yes, I know women who “eat whatever they want” but I find that those women tend to not want a lot of junk or are really good at naturally stopping when full.
I also know quite a few overweight runners, were talking women who regularly run marathons. |
| I run between 30 and 35 miles per week at 7:30 and 8:30min/mile pace depending on the workout, WT 2-3 times per week, ride my bike to work 2 times per week, and eat a sensible diet JUST to maintain weight. I’m a middle aged woman. Sigh. It didn’t take this much effort not too long ago but I thank myself beach months. I keep myself motivated by signing up for two 1/2 marathons a year- one in spring and fall. |
The overweight runners are probably maintaining their weight, albeit at a number that you find unacceptable. Without running they would weigh more. |

| I run 5 days a week, with 3-4 miles for 4 days and 6 miles on the 5th day. I also do weights on the 3 mile days, and do Insanity DVDs on the other 2 days a week. I have maintained 124-127 lbs for all of my non-pregnant life. I am 50 |
This is generally my routine. 4 miles/day 5x week. Some weights thrown in for toning. I'm not strict about it. 135lbs 5'9". 45 YO. |
