| I’m still confused about what happened. Did she get the twisties or was/is it about her mental health? The two aren’t the same. |
The 2 are related. |
I don’t necessarily agree with everything you’re saying here, but I do wonder whether never having faltered before had something to do with all this. I can’t imagine being a high level athlete who has literally never faltered until their second Olympics where they are basically the face of the Games for their country. It’s not good for an athlete to never lose or mess up. It puts more and more pressure on them and makes it that much harder when they inevitably don’t have a perfect performance (because they are human after all). I think it’s better to deal with failure and disappointment when the stakes are low, if possible. It’s how we’re supposed to parent our kids — let them fail early when the consequences aren’t too big or they will crumble if they don’t experience failure until they’re adults. I know Simone has faced a lot of adversity in her life and is obviously very tough. But “failing” at gymnastics does seem like a completely new experience for her and maybe on top of other things in the background tipped her over the edge in terms of her mental health and confidence. |
No one knows, except possibly her |

She pulled out of vault and uneven bar finals. I feel so bad for her- so much training for this one week and she has to sit it out.
However I am happy that Mykayla will get a chance to medal on vault! |
Oh yes, dear official arbiter of what is racist. |
The twisties are a mental block that is usually due to intense stress, pressure or fear. This is her body’s way of saying get me out of here. |
Just like “bullying” and “troll”, the word racism has lost all meaning. |
My guess is that being unable to safely compete skills she has been training for years had a pretty negative impact on her mental health. |
All that focus was dollar signs for her too. |
She's old news. Only in lala land is being unprepared, then losing, then quitting on your teammates more honorable and eternalize you as a goat. And it was totally narcissistic for her to remain in Japan to steal the spotlight from her teammates. Rules don't apply to the annoying diva.

Considering there has been several explanations from being overwhelmed, stresses, not able to take adhd meds, trauma from previous things (nasser, childhood), this isn’t an acute case of twisties. The twisties is one of the many symptoms of her larger mental break. |
| Doesn't she have to leave Japan? I thought the Covid rule was that you had to exit the country within 48 hours of your last event. |
| She is still registered for beam, so until she decides if she is competing on that, she stays in Japan. I'm glad she isn't doing floor - if there is any risk of the twisties, that is too dangerous. |
