Biles out

No discussion of this on here yet? She’s out of the team competition and they say TBD for the rest. Claiming it’s a mental issue and not a physical one. I cried hearing that. The pressure must be so enormous.

All I saw from my news feed was "medical issue." Poor kid.

I read it's her ankle, not sure where the mental stuff is coming from.

She's struggled with injuries this year, that level of gymnastics is extremely hard on your body and almost all the elite athletes battle injuries as a result.

But the reality is also that while a prominent and well publicized one, the Olympics are just another competition and you don't risk permanent injury for a single competition.

I heard injury as well. Nothing about mental.

the Olympics are the only one that national media and sponsors care about

I read the team claims she was physically fine but out for the night. If you Google it it looks mental.

Sad for her. Can't help but think of athletes like Biles, Nathan Adrian, Lochte, etc who held on for another 4 then 5 years to compete instead of moving onto another chapter of their lives. I saw an interview where Simone says that something hurts everyday, and she's only 24. Missy Franklin the swimmer held on as far as Rio and had problems and now can hardly swim even for fun due to shoulder problems.

How awful
For her

The NY Post is hardly the most reliable source. The NY Times and news agencies are calling it a medical issue.

Mental issues are medical issues. I would be surprised if it’s not something mental. I feel awful for her.

I believe it is mental and that is okay. She has had so much to shoulder and I think once she blundered the vault she was worried about what else might happen. I am hopeful that she can come back and compete as an individual once she doesn't have the team aspect weighing her down.

No one is disputing that mental issues are medical issues. What is in dispute is people jumping to conclusions when nothing has been officially released.

News outlets are reporting both - unspecified medical and mental. Time will tell.

I heard the same interview. This is a main reason we pulled our child from high level gymnastics after an injury. I could not imagine life with pain everyday.

The amount of pressure on these top athletes is absolutely insane. I know Michael Phelps has spoken openly about his struggle with anxiety and depression. I hope she’s OK.

Tell that to Artur Dalaloyan. He did all 6 events in the qualifying and team competition despite rupturing his Achilles 3 months ago, being unable to do any dismounts at all as of 6 weeks ago or jump with 2 feet, and having not practiced his floor routine at all. He did both vault and floor in both rounds of competition this week despite not being medically cleared for either.

This is not a criticism of Biles, more a commentary on Artur Dalaloyan being insane. But the Olympics push people to do things that are objectively illogical. He sounded almost resigned to blowing up his leg but seemed to think it was worth it.

Poor Simone. What timing.
