I believe he got engaged to Gabriette to get back at Taylor. Not to say he's not attracted to her or anything- she's much more his physical "type" than Taylor ever was. But I think it's really annoyed him how dating Taylor got him the horrible PR (Swifties and Taylor-haters dug up his comments about watching racist violent pron on some podcast and attacked him for months over it) and then how she released "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived" with the lyrics making fun of his "Jehovah's witness suit", etc. His best strategy is the same strategy that most men use nowadays when they get called out for acting badly- "We never dated, it was never that serious, lol, she's just crazy". The Gabriette engagement is the final nail in the coffin "proving" that to be true- while Taylor pined over him for a decade, he proposed to Gabriette within a few months. Men do this kind of performative stuff all the time.
