How to determine target weight?

Anonymous
I am 5’4”, a small to medium frame, and fairly muscular. Does 125 seem reasonable as a target weight?

Yes IMO. I’m the same height and build. I’d love to be 120 but it isn’t reasonably attainable anymore. 125-130 is my goal (currently 135)

Yes, I think it is also a good idea to look at the weight have you been as an adult. Have you ever been 125? Was it easy to maintain that weight? I also always comes down to how much you are willing to do to get to a certain weight.

OP here. Good question. I was between 120-125 in my early 20s and again after my second child was born. If weight isn’t made a priority, my weight floats up to 130-135. I’m 132 now and feel like I have some extra weight on me.

Given that I definitely think 125 is reasonable for you. but again i also think it will depend on how much you are willing to do/give-up to get there and stay there. Maybe it won't be much, but you'll have to assess as you lose weight.

The Weight Loss for Busy Physicians lady says find go for the middle of the range of your height/BMI, even if you put on muscle quickly or are big boned.

I always wonder about this. I like the “mid point” advice. I also think you know your body.,,

I got to the weight at the mid-low end of healthy BMI that “nutritionist” recommended. My period stopped. I was sick all the time.

My Dr advised to Add 5 lbs. my period came back and the constant being sick stopped..

I did like being a size 2. Oh well...

I'm 5'3" and my goal is 140 - that will make a size 8 which is fine for me.

Thank you for this. I'm 5'8 small / med frame and see charts saying 126 for me. I just....can't do it, I know I can't maintain it without getting to a bad, obsessive place. Ugh.

I am 5’4” with a very small frame and am 130 lbs right now which is overweight for my frame (before I get bashed for disordered body image, my stomach extends significantly beyond the line of my breasts like it would when pregnant). My weight should be 115ish. But, a friend of mine is 5’5” and 130 is her typical weight, and she looks terrific and has toned abs. She looks much more trim and fit than I do. So much of this depends on your bone frame and where you carry weight.

I'm 5'5" and range 120-125, usually closer to 125 side. I started at 135 a few months ago. I think this is the perfect weight for me. 135 was zero work, as in at whatever I wanted and didn't do formal exercise for years while having children. I didn't look bad or fat, but I wanted to be more lean looking and stronger with more stamina. At 125 I feel lean (and have been working out regularly for about a yr) and slim. But when I creep closer to 120 I start looking too thin in my face and upper half. Losing 10 lbs I did sacrifice a cup size in my breasts. It is also effort to maintain but not a ton. I cut out most sweets, flavored lattes, red meat and am careful with portions. I still have a little dark chocolate daily and am more liberal on weekends. I don't count calories at all.

I guess it depends how your body is shaped and where your weight is distributed. I think a goal of 125 is perfect and you can see from there if that feels good and if it is maintainable without being obsessive about your food.

I am 5’8 and my goal is 170. That will put me in the “normal” range for BMI but also compliments my curvy/thick frame without being unhealthy. I think it all depends on your body frame. 125 sounds fine for you.

Whoa! I’m 5’8 as well and 126 would be sickening for me!

I don’t think any charts say 5’8” ideal weight is 126.
