Oh well. California is off our list. Its not like it was affordable anyway.

Guess we will have to find someplace else (anywhere else) to raise a family.

North Dakota is 1st. Have you ever lived in ND? I have. If that's what their methodology is coming up with as best in the country, it's hard to trust anything else they say.

How do you rank a state the size of half the east coast as a single entity?

There are (or were) a ton of jobs in ND. Helps increase income.

Hmmm.... well at least Texas is at the bottom with California?

I don’t give these “rankings” any attention. They’re just click bait.

The quality of life is overall quite high in California, but...it really depends on who you ask. If you are poor and live in CA, it’s low. If you are poor and live in most states, it will also be poor.

It’s common sense.

Here are reasons CA has a good quality of life:

1. Thriving economy and job opportunities for young people

2. Renowned public universities that are reduced or no-cost for working-class families.

3. Low property taxes

4. Strong environmental protections

5. Strong consumer protections

6. Enormous agriculture center and strong farming community: we grow what the world eats.

7. Gorgeous, beautiful slow life

8. Fun, fast paced city life

9. Family friendly, kids-riding-bikes suburban life

10. Warm weather, sunny blue skies

11. Entrepreneurial, creative, optimistic people

12. Excellent hospitals and health care

13. Successful public health care programs including the exchange “Covered California”

14. Free or low-cost amenities throughout the entire state: camping, hiking trails, wildflowers, beaches , state parks, national parks, etc.

15. Gorgeous, protected open space

Still are (I live here).

The methodology is there if you look at the article. Obviously there are tradeoffs (yea, it's 3 below today). But you know, a building downtown Fargo is nearing completion with a $7 million penthouse apt--2 floors below are divided into 2 and 4 respectively and each floor going for $7 million, some definitely have been sold although nobody knows about the top penthouse--who will buy a $7 mil penthouse in Fargo you may ask? So does everyone I know, but the gov is the founder of the development company it was his software company that brought Microsoft here 20 years ago (when he sold to Microsoft).

2. Renowned public universities that are reduced or no-cost for working-class families. (But K-12 generally stinks.)

3. Low property taxes (Yeah, which is one of the why the cost of housing is so sky-high. People are disincentivised to make transactions as their property taxes really only catch up with their house value when they are bought and sold.)

4. Strong environmental protections

5. Strong consumer protections

6. Enormous agriculture center and strong farming community: we grow what the world eats. (Why would this make my life better?)

7. Gorgeous, beautiful slow life (This is a myth for anyone in tech)

8. Fun, fast paced city life (Except the lack of public transport makes it no fun to get around)

9. Family friendly, kids-riding-bikes suburban life (Except the schools suck)

10. Warm weather, sunny blue skies (Wild fires, 100+ degree heat, drought)

11. Entrepreneurial, creative, optimistic people (Asshole, bro, sexist culture in tech)

12. Excellent hospitals and health care

13. Successful public health care programs including the exchange “Covered California”

14. Free or low-cost amenities throughout the entire state: camping, hiking trails, wildflowers, beaches , state parks, national parks, etc. (Everywhere has these. Though CA's landscape is great.)

15. Gorgeous, protected open space

Corrected that for you.

For real. I am a Californian and I am in North Dakota right now. I would go back to California in a hot second. About the only thing ND has going for it is it's cheaper. The weather sucks. Fargo has some decent restaurants but nothing compared to any city in California. Produce selection is spotty at best. Shopping of any kind ... etc, etc. Even the mail service takes forever. There is nothing here. AND did they account for medical care? there are practically no specialists in most of the state. There are 6-10 month waiting lists for specialty care and you have to drive 4-6 hours for them. This is not "best quality of life."

High income jobs and friendly people. It's extremely affordable.

ITA -- "quality of life", like most things, are subjective. I would absolutely hate it in ND.

I live in San Francisco. I've lived in three other states in my life, and am happier here than I've been in any of the others.

Why, yes. This is totally true. Everyone should move to ND and not to California. It is terrible here in California, just terrible. It's much better in ND and you should move there.

LOL It would help if we could spread people out but I don't think ND has the kinds of jobs that would make it attractive for many educated people.
