If your AAP middle school site is a secondary school...

Does the school let you continue on for the 9-12th grades? Or are you required to go back to your base secondary school? I'm specifically wondering about LBSS and Robinson but don't know if there are any other secondary schools in the county that are AAP sites and deal with this.

So, say my kid's base school is Robinson but b/c of AAP opts to go to LBSS for 7th and 8th grade AAP services. What happens in 9th grade when AAP is over? I always thought you'd have to go back to your base school and could only stay at LBSS if you opted to apply for transfer and use something like the "I want AP instead of IB" as reasoning. But I'm hearing from other people that the kids that are in AAP at LBSS are given the option to continue there simply b/c they've already started there for AAP.

Anyone know or have experience with this?

You go back to your base school for high school. There is no AAP in High School so you return to your in boundary school.

I believe the only exceptions are for language immersion programs. A kid who is out of boundary at Fox Mill for Japanese will go to Carson as long as they continue to take Japanese. If the child drops Japanese in 7th or 8th grade, they return to their base school middle school. If the child continues to take Japanese and stays at Carson, they can choose to go to one of the two high schools that have the higher level Japanese program. I am not certain if those out of boundary kids would go to South Lakes or McLean based on distance or if they have a choice. I believe that the same holds for out of boundary kids for other languages.

I actually wonder if the reason why the Japanese Immersion program at Fox Mill is popular is because it is a different way for people to be able to access Carson for Middle School.

If they're allowing kids to stay at LBSS, the official reason they check on the form is almost certainly for AP vs IB. They're "allowed" to stay, but there's no transportation.

We're in the Robinson pyramid too but will opt out of AAP in middle school for that reason. We don't have the ability to pupil place to LBSS for logistics reasons for high school and don't want DD to start there in middle school and have to leave her friends all over again. Robinson needs its own AAP center, there's absolutely no excuse for not having one.

OP here - Same here. We will drop AAP for 7/8 and just opt for honors instead so that we can stay at our base secondary school.

We are not at that point yet, however, and someone else asked me this question and told me that their neighbor said their kid would be allowed to stay at Lake Braddock. But I was under the impression, like others here, that was not possible. I can't really find information online about it so thought I'd ask here for experience or expertise.

If someone is getting transportation to LBSS because they were in AAP for 7/8, that would be big news.

You can attempt to pupil place, but it is difficult and you have to go through the process each year.

If the bus is coming down the street to pick up the 7th and 8th grade AAP-ers, then I think you could request to ride the same bus when you are in 9th-12th grade. I believe there is an "exception to ride" option that you would have to request each year. If they have space, they will allow it.

Doesn't high school start after Middle School? So parents send their kids to school early?

Be careful. We are zoned for Robinson and our closest school is Woodson. So, we had to choose for our kid. They ended up skipping AAP in middle and just enrolled in Robinson. A lot of kids do this (about half?)

At the secondary schools, all kids go at the later time.

Most AAP kids who end up going to Robinson just opt out of LBSS ms AAP. There's enough of a cohort at Robinson for there not to be much difference in programs and the middle school begins the MYP program for IB that gets them used to the assessments and style of instruction in the IB program. A kid who went to LBSS for MS AAP from Robinson Pyramid could pupil place due to AP vs. IB if they desired, but no transportation will be provided.

There are considerably more 9-12 pupil placements to LBSS this year (238, according to information assembled by FCPS staff shortly before the current school year began) than any other high/secondary school in FCPS. Always assumed it was kids who didn’t want IB or wanted to stay at the same school as other kids from the AAP program at LBSS.

LBSS is a huge school so historically has been able to accept pupil placements. It is still listed as open for pupil placements in 2020-21 (Woodson and many other schools are closed to transfers).

There are nearly 600 kids in the MS AAP program at LBSS and probably about half are not at LBSS as their base for HS. Not surprising that they might decide to stay in the school they have grown comfortable with. I think this is the primary reason for the pupil placements (and somewhat built into the enrollment projections).
