Jobs and Careers
However, if the government reopens when you are on vacation, you have cut your vacation short and report back to the office. |
This is not that clear, and not how it works in practice. You can call your boss and get your leave approved. It just isn't already approved, anymore. |
| PAID VACATION TIME! Honestly, I’m not heartbroken about the shutdown. At this point my work is so awful that I would not even care if they RIF me. I have been interviewing for jobs now for 6+ months and will bail as soon as something decent comes along. The market is still awful. Looking forward to Q1. If we have any economy left. |
| I hope the economy crashes to the ground. Right in time for the holidays. |
Given their track record, I don’t expect them to respect this law AT ALL. |
| I'm kind of into this shutdown. General strike!! |
+1 budget for furlough without pay. And then hear Trump brag about how much money he saved |
Absolutely they aren't paying. My DH is a fed and he's being so weirdly nonchalant about this as if he's sure he'll get paid because there is a law. i work in a sector that has been devestated by illegal actions of this administration and think that's incredibly naive. |
The latest shutdown memo from OPM says people will be paid. https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/reference-materials/special-instructions-for-agencies-affected-by-a-possible-lapse-in-appropriations-starting-on-10-1-2025/ |
| My Agency (EPA) is staying open. They sent out an extremely unclear message last night after work hours that doesn’t indicate how long we have funding for. I’ve heard through Friday. |
But the plan is to fire most non essential right? So do you get paid if RIF? |
I do expect them to follow the law. That is a basic expectation of everyone in this country. If they break the law, they can expect to be sued. You can say they've captured the court system, and while that's sometimes true, it's not quite as universal as that. I actually think courts would allow them to lose on this one: it's not really interesting to the unitary executive people. They're more likely to try to change the law on backpay, if they really care, and people should budget cautiously because of that, but a legislative change is hard to predict and hard to accomplish. |
It says “based on laws currently in effect.” I look forward to the long court case about what happens when they change it and try to apply it retroactively. It’s like recessions but for furloughs! |
Hahahaha-don’t believe a word of what they say. |
| At my agency we have received no instructions as to what to do this morning. This is very different from past shutdowns and shutdown scares. |
