are BCC and Whitman going to get less crowded?

Anonymous
with the opening of the new high school at Woodward? Somehow I had the impression that the redrawing of boundaries was going to alleviate crowded in all these close-in schools but in the latest notice I looked at it seemed to say only in WJ and DCC. Will only those schools get overcrowding relief? Thanks to anyone who can clarify...

BCC keeps getting additions and add ons. Some of the DCC are horrible and badly in need or repairs.

Some of BCC will likely end up at Woodward. There is a joint capacity study with WJ and BCC at the ES level right now. Whitman is getting an addition and while BCC is just finishing theirs, they will be overcrowded again soon, and there is no more space to add more classrooms. Plus, in one of the master plans in a BCC area, it says Woodward will relieve overcrowding. Meanwhile, Woodward will likely be overcapacity by the time it opens (or shortly thereafter).

You you realize what poor shape others schools are when the same schools keep getting additions and remodeling. They can fit more kids in if they designed it better. Or, deal with it. Oh no, your rich kids (actually the kids aren't rich, just the parents) are in overcapacity fancy new schools... try private.

They need to do BOTH: modernize the older schools and add capacity (either with additions or new schools) to those that are overcrowded. It is not an either or situation. And, the sooner everyone realizes this (hello MCCPTA leadership - where have you been?), and stops playing into MCPSs plans of dividing the county and pitting communities against each other, the better all of our kids would be.

More crowded, not less, duh.

Call MCPS and ask for numbers, and stop fueling hate for Bethesda.

This PP is conflating 2 separate studies underway within MCPS (among many many others.) The Woodward study examined 8 area HS, including but hardly limited to BCC and WJ (as well as Whitman, Einstein, Northwood, etc etc.) There's a separate study on capacity and utilization of elementary schools in the BCC & WJ clusters.

No one can say with any certainty who is going to end up at Woodward. But given overcrowding at WJ and the proximity between those two schools, it's a reasonable bet that some WJ neighborhoods could be rezoned to Woodward when it's reopened. Projections show BCC will be at capacity in 2021-22 school year, but won't exceed by more than 100 students for another decade. Meanwhile, 5 out of the 7 other schools in the Woodward study (Blair, Einstein, WJ, Northwood & Whitman) are already several hundred students over capacity. MCPS will have to play Tetris with all the boundaries to get all these schools closer to capacity. But I wouldn't assume that BCC will lose large numbers of kids to Woodward, simply because it's one of the few schools in the area that has diversity, good stats, and no more overcrowding.

No one is hating Bethesda. However, there are schools in really poor condition that need to be torn down and rehabbed like BCC and Whitman get. To demand that BCC gets another expansion when other kids are going to overcrowded school in poor conditions is far more a priority. We all pay taxes. Why should one area get their schools updated and remodeled and not others.

Our elementary school has things like gutters falling down, sheds that need to be replaced or at least repaired. You are been really selfish. If overcrowding is an issue for you, send your child to private or move.

Bethesda hating PP: I don't think BCC can get another addition - I'm pretty sure the facilities have maxxed out the site. BCC wasn't torn down - it was expanded because there were almost 2100 kids in a facility with capacity for 1680. You're complaining about a shed that needs replacement at your kid's elementary school; how would you feel if his or her school was overcrowded by 400 students? Finally, just a reminder, no one in Bethesda is determining the construction schedule for MCPS (or anything else for that matter.)

People on DCUM keep asserting that, with no basis in actual reality.

You must live in the BCC Cluster, and are in denial. I think it was the Lyttonsville Master or Sector plan that clearly names Woodward to relieve overcrowding at BCC.

But one of the PPs is right, we will not know who will be at Woodward/how it will be populated for at least 4 more years, when they begin the process.

^^^ This. Big nope on that one. The PP who said the last edition has maxed out the site is correct though.

Even if this is true, MCPS is free to completely ignore the Lyttonsville sector plan.
