DCUMers will be happy to hear( or maybe not?) that the Society of St. Pius X now has a church in DC. Received this email today
“As you have been told previously, the gathering of our little congregation at the Everly Funeral Home in Falls Church can only be a transitory step in the life of our Mission. Since the beginning of the St Pius X Mission in 2012, the lay staff and the priests have been working hard in order to identify and purchase a permanent church. And again last year your priests have been told by Bishop Fellay, then their Superior, that the Society of St Pius X must possess its own Church in the Washington DC area. It is now a fact that the St Pius X Mission of Washington DC has acquired its permanent building. In less than a month a property was found, assessed for being very suitable for our needs, and paid for in full by an anonymous benefactor. The new home of our Mission is in Maryland: 7604 S Osborne Rd Upper Marlboro, MD, 20772 It is a stone's throw East of Joint Base Andrews. On a Sunday morning, it is eight minutes from the Beltway, exit 11 A. When reviewing the facts your priests and their superiors have been obliged to recognize that this place meets all the requirements that had been identified over the years for such a Chapel. Besides the regular advantage of a permanent location (Masses celebrated on Holy days and 1st Saturdays, the possibility of a more convenient time for Sunday Mass, living quarters for the priest) this particular building: -is close from Washington DC and can truly be called the SSPX Chapel of Washington DC; -is already a church and this allows us to enter it and to hold our Sunday Masses there as soon as it pleases, without the need of extensive work for remodeling; -sits on a five acres property which can be developed in the future for the building of a larger Church and of a Rectory house; -does not add any time to the trip your priests have to make from the Seminary in Central Virginia; -is 30 minutes from Reagan Airport; 40 minutes from Baltimore International; -is located in a beautiful area not yet too developed. Also, it is a gift already paid for” Deo Gratias! In Christ SSPX poster |
| Congrats, but aren’t there Catholic Churches there already? |
This is not a real Catholic Church. |
Nonsense. Even Francis sees the SSPX as Catholic |
FTFY |
WRONG q. Francis recognizes validity of SSPX marriages 2. Francis recognizes validity of SSPX Confessions 3. Francis recognizes the SSPX’s authority to ordain priests 4. A Bishop recently retired to the SSPX with Francis’s approval https://www.catholicculture.org/news/headlines/index.cfm?storyid=31663 https://international.la-croix.com/news/retired-swiss-bishop-to-live-in-sspx-home/10152 https://catholicherald.co.uk/magazine/dozens-of-us-bishops-approve-sspx-weddings/ |
| Keep deluding yourself. This is fringe and not seen by practicing US moderate Catholics as an alternative. The one thing I do like about you, OP is that you label your ravings so no one mistakenly thinks it’s a mainstream Catholic position. |
| But it’s not in DC. |
The SSPX has over 650 priests in many countries around the world. Most “moderate” Catholics are heretics. The SSPX is growing. James Martin style “Catholicism” is dying. In Christ SSPX poster |
DC area. |
Then your title is incorrect. |
|
The headquarters of the "Archdiocese of Washington" are in Maryland. Who cares if the SSPX wants to call their Upper Marlboro location the DC branch?
SSPX is not heretical and has never been accused of heresy. Nor are they schismatic. There is no such thing as a "moderate" Catholic. One either believes, holds and professes as true all that the Holy Catholic Church teaches in faith, or one does not. There are several churches with the old Mass in the DC/Baltimore area, but it appears that only a couple of them are full service with daily Mass and all the sacraments available in the old rite. God willing, the SSPX will expand its operations to include that, or perhaps pressure from SSPX will encourage the leadership to expand availability on their own. |
| The building is an ex-Baptist Church. It's going to need a fair amount of work to make it a Catholic facility. |
|
The SSPX poster here certainly sounds schismatic. Does SSPX recognize this Pope’s ability to speak ex cathedra infallibly? Seems unlikely.

A Pope has not made an ex cathedra statement since the definition of the Bodily Assumption by Pius XII In 1950. I don’t even think you know what ex cathedra means. If Francis made an ex cathedra statement( which he hasn’t) it would be infallible, In Christ SSPX poster |
