I’m not going to get on a high horse. We buy food at Costco, eat animal cookies, etc. But in general, we eat very clean. Very low sugar also. Nonetheless, we aren’t the people offering alfalfa sprouts to our kids at the park. They have cheddar bunnies like everyone else.
I didn’t think anything of it until we went to a birthday party with ALL processed food. I couldn’t even eat it. It was so gross. And what I did eat, now I have a headache and feel sick. Food included loaves of banana and blueberry bread (must be those breads in the “bakery” at wal mart that expire in a few months?), mini quiches, vanilla yogurt, and donuts. I’m not sure what was in the food, but my gosh, I feel SO sick! |
| You are insufferable. Why do you even assume it was the food making you sick? |
| Most people are happy just to be invited. That sounds like pretty normal party food. What was wrong with the yogurt? |
Plus, if it was so gross you couldn’t even eat it, how is it making you sick? |
|
First, be honest, you are on your high horse. Own it.
It was probably the sugar or salt. We are pretty down the middle with healthy v processed, but i find the salt in processed food it what kills me. I feel like I’m living in a desert for a few hours after that. |

I hear you, OP. We are by no means perfect eaters. But the spread at my ILs for the Fourth in NJ was...challenging. Mayonnaise-laden "salads," sickeningly sweet baked beans, the cheapest and most processed buns, honestly NO vegetables that weren't dressed/covered in mayo.
People knock Midwestern food, but at least there are always plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables on offer at my family's events. But the thing is, even when you find yourself in a situation like that, you know it's one meal, or at the very least, a short visit. It feels good to get back on track. Do the best you can, and remember that this too shall pass. You'll be back to normal soon. |
| Those don’t sound so terrible - I thought you were going to say it was Doritos, koolaid and the cheapest hot dogs only or some such. |
| Sounds extremely improbable that shelf stable baked goods or a vanilla yogurt made you feel ill. Probably a virus. |
| Sounds good to me. Sorry you are such a pain in the arse guest. Maybe you shouldn’t go to parties anymore. |

I think too much sugar and fat without stuff like proteins and fruits/vegetables will make a person feel yucky, and supermarket quick breads are awful (I figure, why waste the sugar calories unless it's decent tasting sweet, preferrably a really good sweet). But try not to judge. It's a matter of not just what people have been exposed to but also money and time. But it's likely more a lack of other food groups at the event and filling up on the sweet stuff that makes you feel crappy.

I am a nice guest and didn’t throw the table, like some diva.
It’s an anonymous forum so I thought I’d share here. I knew I’d get blasted, but I also know that DC people scorn at me for offering cheddar bunnies when they offer kale chips. So there ya go. |
|
Too much sugar and salt. Fat is actually easily digestible, contrary to what most people think, so it probably wasn't that. |
| Proud of you OP! Part of the greatest generation. |

What I don't get is how people seem to opt for sheer volume/number of dishes, rather than quality.
I'm not talking about making sure everyone has enough to eat; I'm talking excess of crap just so there is excess. Some people honestly think having a Thanksgiving spread with 12 side dishes--crap sides like Stove Top "dressing" and cheap deli potato salad--is better than having four high-quality, homemade sides. Or that 28 crap Christmas presents are better than two great ones. I don't get the volume players, I really don't. |
| I hate people who feel sick it is really irritating. |
