To repeat 5th grade maybe?[/quote

No, to attend a high-regarded private. Sorry to disappoint.

^^ why are they always "high(sic)-regarded" private schools? Are there any run-of-the-mill ones? Tired of the inflation of value of schools. It takes no imagination to charge $30k.

Really, I'm tired of boosters suggesting that those who fail to drink the BASIS Kool Aid are stupid or have stupid children.

Guess we're even?

BASIS parent here.

PP, would you be willing to elaborate? Are your children boys or girls? What grades are they in? How were they bullied? How did the administration respond (or not respond)?

Our daughter is at BASIS now and has not experienced any bullying. Our son will likely attend in a couple of years, and I do worry that he might be bullied.

Thanks

The feeling I get after a few visits to Basis is that the kids run the show there. I would much prefer a place where the adults set the tone and are clearly in charge rather than one where they react to kid behavior exclusively. I think it leads to a more mature atmosphere. Seems to me the basis tries to create a school culture by holding dances for 5th graders and electing "most intelligent" and "best dressed" in their middle school yearbook rather than ongoing discussions about character and values. It may come out in more nasty behavior among the students.

I am also getting a bit suspicious of the validity of the grades. True, the teachers curve the grade, but a student in my child's class who consistently failed with one teacher started getting A's with another one.
Besides, why are teachers allowed to tutor at home?

I'm not a BASIS booster and don't think that non-BASIS famies or children are stupid. Just noticing how privates re almost alwqys referred to on DCUM.

I have not seen any grading on a curve at all or grade inflation. All of the tests/ quizzes had questions that were either right or wrong and writing assignments had rubrics. Also, some parents who came from other schools were shocked at how their kids got easy A's at other schools and suddenly had to work hard at BASIS and were not getting A's. BASIS also provided extensive tutoring in school for struggling students so I see it as very plausible that a student improved. In fact, they give out awards for most improved. I have also seen no tutoring at home

Well there are large swaths of parents whose children had a great year at BASIS. The administration does care about children getting bullied. My kid was bullied for a very short period of time and the administration and teachers were very responsive.

New Parent here. Could the parents whose kids have experienced bullying please elaborate with examples. The word seems to just be thrown around generally. Has your kid been called names continuously, teased (how), hit, etc. I'm just trying to get a handle on what bullying means at Basis.

Current parent here -- I would like more examples, too. All I know is that nothing I saw at BASIS looked as bad as anything I witnessed at our former DCPS.

DS had a great year, he had no problems other than having a few bad days with one particular kid early in the year, and that worked itself out. He was actually crying, said he will miss the school and his friends over the summer, said he had never made such deep connections with other kids in ES. We're looking forward to next year.

^crying about the school year ending, that is.

My child is off to Washington Latin. BASIS DC is a mess. I agree that children ran the show at this place. The Head of School (Paul Morissey) was a puppet for my kid. My husband and I want a place where responsible and ethical adults are in charge, not children.

Why do boosters try so hard Maybe the school can't speak for itself. Just like buying a house, car whatever. You get suspicious when the sales rep is just trying too hard. Get the hint boosters, you are trying too hard. If BASIS DC is great let it speak for itself.
