Wait a minute. So they don't actually have "intensive student support" in place for next school year? How did they address the charter board concerns that they've never dealt with poor non-white kids en masse? (Over simplification, but basically that's what critics are worried about.)

Is it petty to be concerned about a grammatical typo on their DC website?

OMG...if you were Mary and it were her kid's teacher she'd transmit that to the world...YES ...it's petty AND funny

21:58 again. Just saw a video about their Tuscon school. Why so defensive about diversity? The school is supposedly 60% white, but the video is like 90% non-white looking. Oh, and one kid has a hearing aid! A white-looking girl enthuses "so-and-so is half-African!" The Latino director emphasized, in Spanish, that there is "opportunity" at the school for Hispanics. Why wouldn't there be? The video included shots of a liquor store to, I guess, show how urban it is? (University of Arizon aside...) This may have no bearing on how the DC branch of the school is run. But it does make me question their judgement and readiness to deal with DC if this is their most diverse school location.

In DC, could be that few parents of unprepared kids even apply and that parents of already well-prepared kids will apply en masse. This will include many whites who have just been waiting for the right charter school for their advanced kids.

ITA! The application pool for the lottery will probably favor middle to upper middle families and families of all SES backgrounds with high scoring children.

I see Stoddert, Hyde, Key, and maybe even a few Mann parents applying as the alternative to Hardy. Yeah charters!

Where will BASIS be located in 2012 / be located initially?

It would be so awesome if the answer is not "50th St NE." Please please please .... be central?
Anonymous
Central to who? 50th street NE is favored near a metro station. So it would be central for many.

"central" is generally understood to mean "in the center." You're possibly confusing that with the word "convenient" ?

The geographic center of DC is, what? about 14th and Columbia. It certainly isn't Capitol Heights in PG County.

I hope this school locates in a place that is convenient to the highest number of residents in the District of Columbia.

Wow...this sounds a little scary, like this Mary is someone to worship. Does Mary Siddall have experience in administration of education policies or running a school? Greatness? Tell me about that.
