My mom hates the menu for my preschoolers birthday party

Anonymous
My parents are coming in from out of town for my daughter's 4th birthday.

In the past I have done a more elaborate menu but since this year we are keeping it simple and serving hot dogs and mac and cheese (along with salad, fruit and baby carrots)

My mother has been on a perpetual diet since my sister was born 32 years ago. She does not have any health restrictions she just doesn't like to eat certain foods. she told me that she absolutely could not eat hot dogs and that she had to have something else for dinner. She has been going on on about making something in a crock pot because the menu is not acceptable. I'm just about to cave because I'm tired of hearing her kvetch about it

Tell her to bring what she wants to eat. End of story. Complaining? "I'm hanging up now," and do it.

So you’re an adult OP. And so is your mom. As PP suggested, your mom can bring something she would like to eat. Or she can eat ahead of time.

And you are not obligated to change your menu or listen to her complain about it. Really. You are an adult. If you do change your menu, you’re making a decision to reward her for rude behavior. This will give her incentive to repeat this behavior. Maybe you like the drama. Who knows? If you truly hate it, then be an adult and shut it down.

Bottom line, your house, your menu. She can go pound sand.

However, are there going to be a lot of adults at the party? If there are I’d have a more grownup option. Also., what are you doing with the hot dogs? Are you cutting them up? I don’t think I’d serve whole hot dogs to a bunch of excited four year olds. There are reasons why you cut hot dogs and grapes before giving to kids. They really are airway blockers (and I do sadly know of a kid who died).

Yes. OP should stick to purées, maybe some apple sauce?

WTF is wrong with you!?! You think 4 year olds can’t handle solid food???? Really?

Your menu sounds disgusting to me and I’d be bummed to not get a decent meal if I was coming from out of town. But I’d just eat beforehand or something and be surprised at your standards.

Oh and I’m not on a diet- I just don’t eat hot dogs or mac and cheese.

It’s a kid’s party, not a dinner party! Is it at meal time? Are you planning to provide food for the grownups, since I assume it’s not a drop-off, or is it like 4-6pm and you’re serving early kids dinner?

Let your mom make something in a crockpot. The other adults at the party can partake in whatever she makes. I’m sure her tone is annoying, but if she’s traveling to see you why not make sure there’s something she likes to eat, or at least let her provide it?

Damn. Between you and the poster who thinks 4 year olds cannot handle hot dogs, I’m not sure who is more of a lunatic.

I wouldn’t eat it either. But I wouldn’t judge or tell you about it.

Is this a kid party or a family adult party? For kids it's great. If it's a family adult thing with just one or two kids I'd make grownup food and extra throngs for the kids. But that's me.
In your house you can do what you want and your mom can bring herself whatever she wants or eat before hand.

Geez, the menu sounds fine for a 4 year old's party. Your mom is annoying, as are all the posters freaking out about hot dogs. I assume that this party is, what, 2 hours? Kids are usually too excited at parties to eat much more than cake anyway. If adult guests are too disgusted by hot dogs to eat them, they can nibble on fruit, have some cake, or just go for a whole 2 hours without eating.

If you want to sidestep all the drama, maybe just order pizza.

On principle, do not let your mom break out the crock pot.

I would make sure there was something in the fridge that she could eat, but that is me.
