Who knows? The only thing released by DOD is a fake picture with some guy holding an American flag. The interesting thing is the back seat guy was a Colonel or captain in navy(o-6 senior field-grade officer). Most back seaters are really young and low rank like Lt(0-1or2) or Captain(0-3).
Maybe the US military really could not let a senior commander with operational knowledge fall in to the hands of the Iranians?

There is a rumors that it was an o-6 from the IDF. Really embarrassing to shoot down an American F-15 and find a senior Israel in command of the mission and in command of Americans. Just a rumor but it seems to be gaining traction. Yipes.

We just lost two fighters to a fighting enemy in more than 20 years. I don't see how that's winning, when you couple that with all the other helicopters and jets we just lost. A pretty timely case study on why a ground invasion needs to be avoided. It'd be disastrous with US ground force troops devastated (MUCH harder to attack than defend).

The IDF can do the ground and air invasion and risk lives for their war. Why did they wait 40 years for America to do it?

They have an elite army and Air Force. Iran’s government was not a serious threat to the US. They’re a threat to Israel. Israel is intimidated by Iran and its proxies who launch missiles at Israel since the Gaza war began. They serve as de facto Palestinian armies. None of this has anything to do with the US.

Let them fight and die for that land without American soldiers having to die
