| We're looking at houses zoned to Shrevewood Elementary in the Fairfax County party of Falls Church - just wondering if anyone can provide recent feedback on school and teachers (DD will be starting 1st grade, so if there are any particular teachers you recommend that would be awesome -- I know we can't request a teacher, but it would still be good to know). What is the class size like? How are the specials teachers? What are the principal and assistant principal like? Overall, how is the community? Is the PTA friendly to working parents? That sort of thing... |
| Teacher recommendations? Hell to the no. It is inappropriate to post chatter about teachers, either positive or negative, in a forum like this. |
If your name's not Jeff Steele, you have no right to stay what is or is not appropriate here. |

OP, my kids are at Shrevewood. We've generally had good to great teachers, although there certainly has been a dud or two along the way.
The school is bursting at the seams, so much so that there will be a boundary study next year and likely rezoning in the Fall of 2021. (Too late for one of my kids.) The PTA is very friendly, and PTA meetings are held in the evenings (many of the officers and committee chairs work). The big events - Fall Fair, Bingo Night, Science Fair - are also held in the evenings or on the weekend. There has been a churn of APs over the years - the past few have gone on to become principals at nearby ES. That said, they have all been excellent! |
| OP here, thanks. |
| Another Shrevewood parent here - school is WAY overcrowded and the kids who aren't ESOL, Special Ed, or AAP are left to fend for themselves. |
Can you give examples? How does it work for younger grades -- there's no AAP in first grade, right? |
| Our DC is in 2nd grade. We've had nothing but a good experience at Shrevewood. the PTA is very active, and there are a lot of activities throughout the year as someone else mentioned. One in particular is International Night - Shrevewood prides itself on being diverse; there are children whose families hail from over 50 different countries with about 25 different languages spoken at home. Our child is also in the SACC program, and the instructors there are wonderful. |
| Terrible school. Avoid if possible. |
| Way too crowded. |
| Several of the adults at the school have been unprofessional. I don’t know if they are overwhelmed because of the overcrowding and the “diverse” student body, but really there’s no excuse imo. One of my kids has special needs, but it isn’t obvious unless you say it. Well, a parent volunteer shamed my special needs kid for not being able to figure out their total when they shopped at a school fundraising event. They felt so bad and so embarrassed because they were trying to make a purchase but couldn’t figure out the total minus the cash I sent with them and the volunteer said something like “you’re old enough to know that! You shouldn’t be asking me to calculate it!”. I’ve also heard from both of my kids about the teachers at specials being very impatient and mean. It makes them dread seeing those teachers. The gym teacher is very good though. The classroom teachers have been hit or miss. There are some good teachers and some terrible teachers. You will end up with at least one terrible teacher if you send your kids there, so get ready for it. |
Why do you think it's terrible? |
Which boundaries and to what school? |
Shrevewood and, for sure, at least Stenwood. |
| Timberlane is less than a mile away and is under capacity. |
