Fairfax County GT/AAP Appeals.

We sent in an appeal with a GBRS of 15. Test scores were low but psychologist said committee, through extensive comments and high GBRS, is trying to say child belongs at center. Child is only one in class doing extra projects. Cogat 108, Naglieri 117, WISC V- 121. Seemed like no acceptance to me, but teachers and psychologist days this is unusual case. One three on report card. Almost all 4's for two years. Working above grade level in math and reading. This is a case where the ability and desire to produce is very high while some kids get the test scores, but don't produce. I don't expect appeal to work, but it is supposed to be a wholistic program, not a gifted program. He has to be given extra work constantly. Teacher says he was perfect candidate. GBRS in first grade was 14. Committe doesn't get that score of course.

Did the WISC have wide variations between sub scores?

It did. Fluid reasoning was very high. Can't remember exact number and I'm out! He functions too well in school and now in sports to merit ADHD considerations. We are keeping that possibility in mind, but he continues to excel. We are going to get a tutor for test taking skills. He likes to rush. Didn't affect him on school tests- but seems to on standardized. All who know him say he'd want to just finish first. He's reacting well to changing that instinct/desire/thought that first is the goal. Discusses it openly. Teacher says he reacts well to being asked to do something different. I think if you can grow out of attention. Issue, he's one of those. Psychologist said he missed things he clearly would know based upon his writing, conversation skills, etc.

We also submitted an appeal with similar scores (WISC slightly higher) although GBRS of 10. Fluid reasoning was also very, very high. Overall score brought down by processing ability.

The other thing that the committee wrote was that his test scores did not reflect his advanced academic learner behaviors. I wrote a letter and put 5 bullet points in it and that quite was one of them. Long shot, but filling out appeal costs nothing and as have info we need to move forward -such as work on test taking skills while he's young. I know the class work in AAP would be no problem for him,but he'll do fine in gen Ed. He does need a teacher that is ok with extra projects or he's just bored. But, from the looks of it, the school has his back.

How do you know this? Frankly, I'm surprised the psychologist would say this to you in light of the IQ results. I'm not trying to be mean but just being honest.

Verbal 118
Visual 111
Fluid 121
Working 117
Processing 114
Full Scale I.Q. 123

GBRS is low (7)

NNAT 152 (99%)
COGAT (130) (around 95%)
Report Card - Most 4s and few 3s

I don't think they're that great but you paid for the WISC so try. I just don't see a 123 doing it and there are no stand out sub scores.

The only new thing if the FSIQ and I don't think a 123 is high enough for admission. Good luck, though.

I know this because the teacher and I have talked. Test scores may be everything to some people, but they are not the only indicator of someone that is capable (and doing) extremely high performance standards. The comments on the GBRS indicated the projects and the high level of performance. I know his AART school teacher, principal, first and second grade teachers were all very surprised at the test scores versus their assessment of him. It is their assessment that lead to a referral. The psychologist met with us again for free after his denial asking to see his file. After looking at it, she said this was a case worth submitting. She said 60-70 percent chance. This is me listening to professionals. He's not the standard case for sure, but that's ok. Many kids with great test scores are not good students.

I think people are trying to be mean or you would phrase things differently!

Surprised someone getting 3s & 4s in grade reports was given a really low GBRS of 7. Curious what the sub scores of GBRS were?

It does not hurt to appeal, but I would not think your child would be found Center-eligible based on those WISC scores.

I think it is highly unlikely if that is your only new evidence. A 120 FSIQ will not warrant admission, I'm afraid.

Thank you for your reply. I was also going to submit some extra work of her ability. A book report, games she created, document how she taught herself to knit.
Am I grasping.
Her brothers are in the program. Having seen the program I know she is more than capable
