Where are you getting info that the pilot was "confused" -- how could he not see the plane he was literally flying toward for most of the end of its flight path?

I agree about the bad flight path and the overcrowding of the airport, but this made up narrative makes not sense in this situation.

Because on the ATC recording, they ask the helicopter if he sees the plane approaching and he says yes. Unfortunately ATC and the helicopter were not referring to the same plane.

I asked a pilot and he said no way, the other plane was too far away for this error.

Please explain the recording then. Helicopter confirms they see the plane (the correct one according to your ahem, "pilot friend") and then what? Proceeds to fly into it anyway? Explain what your pilot friend says happened.

Yeah he literally said he doesn’t know, just that it wouldn’t make sense for him to confuse the plane with the plane approaching runway 1.

The official means to account for family members is by calling the American Airlines family support line. People are going to find leaked information on Reddit that is true and that is false. In the video, there’s a plane close to landing ahead of the one that was hit. I would guess the helicopter saw that one because watching the video, it’s the first one that comes forward. The first moving light you see is that plane’s light.

People were posting radar tracker on X last night. The coptrr was zig zagging around on its training flight.
Another AA flight landing after the one that crashed immediately peels off west and presumably heads for Dulles.
I don't think military helicopters are under airport tower control.

I’ve been reading there is it seriously gut wrenching. This isn’t the first time promising skaters have been wiped out by a plane crash either.

I read about a man with the US Figure Skating group who had tried to board the plane but was denied boarding bc he tried to take a dog on the plane and American said it was too big, so he had elected to rent a car and drive back instead. He said there were 13 skaters on the flight, and additional family members and coaches as part of a group that took young skaters to the National Training Camp. So many of those skaters will be children. And then their parents and possibly siblings.
