Segment on GMA now.
His politics are “dead center.” His song is meant to highlight how both sides screw everyone. He’s not wrong imho. |
This right here. People can attach or see whatever it is they want to see, but IMO this is the sentiment behind the song. You have to be from Richmond or other parts of Virginia (outside of NOVA) to get it. This was my immediate gut reaction to the song and I am from a county west of Richmond. And I am not surprised the writer claims to be moderate in politics, most native Virginians really are. |
| The part about fudge rounds makes me cringe. Wish I could unhear it. |
Excellent analogy |
+2 It's like that Moore article from early 2016 |
| Yes, this singer should vote GOP, who will cut rich people’s taxes and eliminate social programs that would help *him,* but will give him more grievances to write songs. |
Yes - the Democrats have done so much to win the hearts and minds of young working class white men. |
And if you’re from NOVA, you really do resent working your tail off to send 5% of your salary downstate, only for it to disappear in the “good old boys’ network” and be wasted on roads to nowhere. Or you have to fight for education funding, or to keep Richmond out of strictly local matters like nuisance towing. Let’s put it this way - we’re sick of the “Good Old Boys in Richmond” getting fat off our hard labor and sacrifice and having the gall to be resentful that we want a seat at the table that we PAID for. |
Young working class white men don’t want a hand up, they want a hand out. That’s the truth. Life’s gotten hard since they have to compete in the new economy on their merits, and the truth is their parents did not position them well for this world. It’s not enough to just show up white in a pressed shirt and with a smile on your face and then be set for the rest of your life. You have to educate yourself in a subject or a trade, lay off drugs, and stop making babies you can’t afford, and then work hard every day and make smart choices on top of it. I grew up working class and let’s just say many of my male peers didn’t get the message. They didn’t value education because their parents didn’t and found themselves completely flat footed when their high school degree did not translate into middle class wealth. Not to say I don’t sympathize with what it is happening - I know better than most that if you’re not born into wealth into this country you have an uphill climb- but the amount of unforced errors I’ve seen boggle the mind. Would you want to hire some entitled brat who can barely spell his name, gets sloshed every night, and has 3 baby mammas sending child support orders to your payroll department? No, you would not. |
Snide remarks like this really encapsulate why democrats might lose in 2024. No empathy. Just dripping disdain for folks that don't live in NW or Bethesda. It's not exactly the party of Roosevelt anymore I agree with you on this point but you are crazy to think that this guy represents the alternative. |
People are dealing with massive amounts of trauma that often takes the form of addiction and impulsive behavior. Generational trauma is biological. Count yourself lucky that you don’t know the depths of such pain. The system is what screws them over. |
I agree with you on this point but you are crazy to think that this guy represents the alternative. People have been talking so long about “personal responsibility” yet they don’t want to actually take it for themselves. Isn’t that what the GOP is really offering the working class these days? “Nothing is your fault, you did nothing wrong, it’s the [black man/woman/leftist elite/Jews/Asians/insert other boogeyman’s fault] that you didn’t get what you’re entitled to as a red blooded hard working white man!” Ignoring the fact that many of them don’t work at all, let alone work “hard”. |
I know this theory and recognize it has merit. But let’s be clear here- we cannot claim that 50% or more of the population are simply helpless and are to be absolved of any bad choices they make. Many of my peers came from stable enough homes. Sure, there was probably a drunk in the family. But there was a whole lot of crabs in a barrel mentality too. “The mines/factory/construction was good enough for me and it will be good enough for you too.” “Only liberal elitists read bikes.” Etc. |
| Working class whites flocked to Reagan and demanded a free market economy. Then, after the cold war, they got what they wanted and the free market economy really showed up. Ohnoes! Now the working class whites have to actually compete with the rest of the world. Bring on the fentanyl and sad songs. |
Read your last paragraph and insert whatever group you want for "hard working white man." Own your disgusting bigotry and bias. |
