When Charles becomes King, Camilla will adopt the title of Princess Consort.
What will happen to her if Charles is to die first? The last time we had a King, his wife - Queen Elizabeth - received the title Queen Mother and still had a prominent role within the royal family because she was the mother of the new Queen. What will happen to Camilla if Charles were to die first and William ascends to the throne? I can't imagine her receiving a special title like Queen Mother. Will she be given an apartment at Clarence House? Will she still do engagements on behalf of the royal family? Will they banish her to Highgrove and she will become a private citizen who no longer appears with the Royal Family? |
We haven’t had a king since 1776. |
Wrong, Lizzie’s dad was the king, as was hi dad |
Very true... |
Haha, PP is referring to the US, where this board is based. We haven’t had a king here in the US since 1776. That whole Declaration and all that ensued. |
| I assume she'll always be Princess consort. Princess Anne retained that title. |
No Anne is Princess Royal. She is the current queen's only daughter. Camilla might get to be Queen if Charles is King. After which she would be Dowager Queen Camilla, or Dowager Duchess of Cornwall if he dies before ascending and he doesn't re-style her Queen. Her being the mother of the heir isn't necessary for her to be the Queen Consort. Once Charles becomes King, he may change her title as he sees fit. Elizabeth the Queen Mother only called herself the Queen Mother to distinguish herself from Queen Elizabeth. |
| She isn't even William's mom so she should be swept under the rug |

Princess Consort.
The Queen Mother was such because she was a prior Queen and she has the same name as her daughter - the current Queen. If William passed before taking the throne I suspect Kate would retain her current title and nothing more as she isn’t the Princess of Wales. But Charles is a pretty healthy 70-year-Old so I think the interesting question is if Camilla would be crowned Queen. |
She also didn't want to be defined as the Dowager Queen, feeling too young for that. Camilla will be Queen Consort, and called Queen Camilla. It's pretty much a foregone conclusion after Clarence House scrubbed all references to Princess Consort from their website. |
Feels weird that Prince Charles promised one thing re Camilla's title and is going to go back on it. Like it wasn't reported around the world and announced by his own office. |
Sorry, forgot to mention if Charles' dies before becoming King she's SOL. She can't stay Duchess of Cornwall because that is a specific duchy granted to each successive Prince of Wales. Meaning William and Kate get it next no matter what. They would have to either re-title her or she would take on one of Charles' lesser titles like Countess of Chester. If Charles is King and she was named Princess Consort, I think she'd just keep the HRH Princess Camilla of Such-and-such. |
Wait, so if the Queen Mother was named something other than Elizabeth, let’s say Jane, would she just have kept on being Queen Jane after Queen Elizabeth’s coronation? |
Yes. Just as Queen Sofia of Spain is still Queen Sofia instead of 'Queen Mother or Reina Madre' even though her son, Felipe, has been King Felipe IV of Spain since 2014. Queen Mother is just something the British made up to dispel confusion with two living, relatively young, Queens who bear the same name and would frequently be seen in the company of each other. |
You seem really confused about where you’re posting. |
