Charles was trapped between two generations. Had he been born a generation earlier or a generation later things would have been very different. But no one was innocent here either. Diana was naive and stupid and emotionally unstable and expected too much and also deliberately manipulated the PR game to favour herself. And died because she was hanging out with a drug-addled playboy boyfriend. At the time of Charles' engagement to Camilla, Diana was still alive and that is why the princess consort was floated to keep the frothing jaws of public opinion at bay. But those jaws are no longer there. That's why, as another poster pointed out, all references to princess consort have been removed from the royal websites. |
Camilla's titles are for life. She is a member of the royal family and would be even after Charles' death as the widow of the heir to the throne or King. She is tolerated because she is the wife of the heir to the throne. Just like they all are. Just like Kate is. The "people" don't have a choice in the matter. As an elderly widow it's likely she would carry out minimal royal engagements. Up to her, really. |
Who knows what the private arrangements are for Camilla should Charles predecease her. I daresay it does depend to a degree on whether Charles ascends the throne first or not. Highgrove is his personal possession and for him to leave as he wishes but Camilla is no slouch in this department and has her own assets. She will certainly receive a Grace and Favour property somewhere. An apartment in one of the London palaces and an allowance. As for royal engagements she will probably continue to carry out some as she wishes, she will have her favourite patronages but the older she gets the more she will probably scale back. She will always be a member of the royal family barring a divorce (not gotta happen) and will always appear with them as much as she wants to. Not everyone dislikes Camilla. |
| honestly, why do people care? esp americans? These are just rich people - why are they more interesting if they had queen victoria as an ancestor? i don't really "get" the royal thing . . . whatever "happens" to camilla, she will be loaded and have a very comfortable life, whatever her title is. |
Diana died in 1997 while Charles and Camilla became engaged in 2005, married that same year. Diana's death put their marriage plans on hold for several years but they were not officially engaged. The Duchess of Cornwall tiled usage was an acknowledgment of how closely people associated Diana with the Princess of Wales title. I'd bet a lot that Charles will make Camilla Queen Consort when he ascends. Diana was never Queen Consort and William and Kate will take the Prince/Princess of Wales title. |

Different people have different interests. When people are interested in different things than you, that doesn't mean they're wrong when they are interested in things that seem uninteresting to you. |
But what if QEII dies tomorrow and Charles becomes King Charles. He will make Camilla Queen Camilla. If he dies a year into his reign, will Camilla remain Queen Camilla or will they make her give up that title? |
I also think because the BRF has no political power, it can be a fun indulgence. |

I wonder what it’s like for Camilla’s kids and grandkids.
They’re regular people but their mom/grandma is going to be the queen of England! |
No she’ll be a dowager Queen consort |
And she will retain her status of Her Majesty, just like the Queen Mother (Elizabeth) did, and previous Queen Consorts (Queen Mary, Alexandra, etc.) |
| Meh. Charles will be well into his dotage when he takes the throne. Does anyone care what Camilla will be called? I'm more interested in seeing the Cambridges there. |
| I think Camilla will go before Charles- she was a notoriously heavy smoker for many years. |
Why do people deress up for medieval fairs? Or following professional athletes or teams in other countries? People have their own unique interests. You don’t need to understand or judge them. |
