I have a very very fuzzy childhood memory of Queen opening for Shaun Cassidy when he played at the Baltimore Arena in like 1979 or so. Hoping DCUM can help confirm or deny it.
I definitely remember Shaun - I was a 10 year old in looooove. So that part is crystal clear. I remember Shaun's pants were so tight that they split, and he had to go backstage to put on some new pants. But the Queen part is less clear. I always thought it was them, but now I'm not so sure. Unfortunately, repeated searches of old tour schedules/set lists - both Queen's and Shaun's - have revealed nothing. This has bugged me off and on over the years but I finally saw Bohemian Rhapsody and now I want to know for sure. Figured someone else here might've attended that Baltimore concert and remembered...thanks. By the way - wouldn't that be weird if it was true? Queen opening for Shaun Cassidy??? Ha! |
At the Civic Center downtown? |
Sean Cassidy played the Baltimore Civic Center, Feb. 25, 1978. Queen did not tour from Dec. 23, 1977 to April 12, 1978. |
When he played DC around the same time, a band named Virgin opened for him.
“A kind of chaperone-bodyguard, Fred Westheimer, has left the White House with envelopes full of souvenirs. "Catch the matches," says Cassidy to a member of Virgin, the opening act in his show (the ads say, "SHAUN CASSIDY - Virgin," but don't ask).” |
You guys are the best. Thanks.
Funny, that WaPo article about Shaun Cassidy was written by Tom Sholes... |
Sounds as plausible as Cher knitting on the Capital Wheel. |
Enjoy, OP!

I don't know this Shawn Cassidy, but in 1979 Queen was huge in Europe, they toured even Yugoslavia that was still a socialist country in 1979. I doubt they were an opening act in the US. But, maybe... |
I'm 53. I doubt that Queen opened up for many acts. maybe when they were just starting out . . . but not for long, I bet PP, Cassidy was a pop idol - and a teen heartthrob. His brother, David, was another heartthrob who was on the Partridge Family. David ![]() |
Half-brother. Shirley Jones was Shaun's mother, David's stepmother. |
Now we are talking my era! |
Shaun started opposite Parker Stevenson on The Hardy Boys. David died a few years ago. |
I also remember Queen opening For Shaun Cassidy when I was little but in Cincinnati. I thought it was around 77 or 78 because I was a little kid and it was my first concert. My dad took me and my older sister because we were in love with Shaun from the Hardy Boys. I remember singing we will rock you all the way home. That song came out in 77 (date is off in the movie.) It had to be Queen. We couldn't both be wrong. Maybe I could be off a little on the year. I too have tried to confirm it without success. |
Sean Cassidy played the Riverfront Coliseum April 4, 1978. Queen did not tour from Dec. 23, 1977 to April 12, 1978. Bohemian Rhapsody was released in 1975. By 1977 Queen was far from an opening act. In Feb. 1978 we are the champions was #4 on the charts. |
THIS. I'm 52 and that Shaun Cassidy record was the first record I ever bought. Begged my mom when I saw it at the mall. And even with a foggy memory, I knew that Queen would have been too big to ever open for Shaun Cassidy. My parents trained us up right: Queen was one of the 8-track tapes we played over and over. ![]() |
