Could you explain the laws of slavery and manumission of the late 1700s? Very few of Jefferson's slaves were freed. Only the children of Sally Hemings, when they became adults (before that they were treated like any children and given an education) and later Sally Hemings herself. |
And those things are . . . ? |
This isn’t accurate. The children of Sally Hemings were freed at Jefferson’s death, not their attaining adulthood, except for those who had to escape from chattel slavery by running away from their home and family. They were not “treated like any children”, and certainly not treated like Jefferson’s white children, they were enslaved at Monticello— the documentation is very clear on this matter. |
Certainly not armchair theorizing and parroting talking points online. https://freddiedeboer.substack.com/p/critical-race-theory-a-consolation |
Now do the laws of manumission and the typical treatment of a "runaway" slave. |
That was a good vent but he is wrong. Maybe when he's not feeling so grumpy he'll admit that. Or maybe he won't. |
| If the idea is that Freddie deBoer is supposed to be a credible leftist, then you lot need to get outside more. Go take a walk or something. |
They aren’t credible to some people, unless the support white supremacy. |
They could but it's not necessary when it's just an introduction to Virginia history. Understanding that slavery was an issue and that it didn't allow people to be free is important. I'm sure some lines about how the founding fathers had slaves and they were not treated well even though these founders espoused freedom for all would be important. But at that age I'd rather gloss over the horrors in such detail and deal with them as kids get older just like other horrors of the world. Do you also think the holocaust is very important to teach at this time as well? How about all the shootings in America? I think it's better to teach horrors in fairy tales first and have briefer mentions of them in the real world and then later realize these are all descriptions of society. It's not healthy to keep telling kids about trauma at such a young age when they don't even know the good in the world and the world is scary to them anyway being so small. The reason we have communities with so much trauma is that they bring the trauma forward with each generation. We're trying to reduce the trauma. Not augment it. |
| I like how finally people are standing up and saying you can't fight racism with more racism. Would be better to point out how slaves actually built the White House, Monticello, etc. Show their actual contributions to society even under oppression. |
| Juneteeth I think is a powerful holiday and should be celebrated. I think it marks a historic time in our country to move forward. I do not like though how they are called the same thing. I think there needs to be something different in the name so that everyone can still celebrate July 4th as well. National Independence Day is too close to Independence Day. Both of these holidays are important and July 4th is the precursor to Juneteeth. All Americans should celebrate both. Not pick one over the other. |
When speaking of Thomas Jefferson, this is a man who would pull teeth from the mouths of slaves because he needed one. He didn’t get false or wooden teeth. When he says slavery was wrong, but owned hundreds of slaves, raped and tortured them, it’s obvious that he knew what he was doing was wrong. Obviously he thought he was above abiding by the laws of humanity and he knew he had and still has all the support of white supremacy. |

Yeah and teach it in high school.
The evil and hypocrisy of government leaders should always be highlighted along with whatever principles and achievements made by the leaders whether they gained power through election, birth, or obvious force of violence. The inconvenient truth of that is that it isn't unique to the cis hetero rich white males of America and the West. |
Would you rather be under British rule? Be a Christian nation still? No one can make him out to be a perfect human. We can honor him for what he did while also portraying him a human with faults. Do you think he deserves honor for the declaration of independence? Many still do and for his role in starting this country. I feel like a lot of people on this forum do not have children in the school system or children who have gone through the school system. Anyone with a reasonable mind would understand that talking about extracting teeth from slaves is not that appropriate as a highlight into history at 4th grade. It's funny how we seem to have no problem with other world history lessons. We don't spend hours talking about all their foils when studying Egypt or China or Mali. We don't have any other founding fathers. Either you accept them as who they are with their faults or you have to make a new country. Which is why there is so much unrest at the political level today. Some people can still recognize the good in failing humans. It's a projection of themselves and their own failings really if they can't and live here. How can they live in a country that was founded by failing humans? How can they support the people of this country and the ones who defend it? They can't accept the failure in themselves and so project that onto others. |
An actual reasonable post. Thank you. |
