When should DC drop its school mask mandate?

Anonymous
They should remove it now. Cases are low.
Anonymous
I would like for DC to just follow CDC guidance. Why is that difficult.

If DC is not following the CDC, what is their criteria reversing the mask mandate in schools? Covid is not going away. Will masks be obligatory in DC schools forevermore?

They've got no metrics and no reasons (at least that they state). Go ahead and ask them for reasons.

Prior to Friday, over the last 2 years, we had a total of 4 notifications of a classmate testing +

Friday, we had 2 notifications. I am not saying that we need to stop everything, I just want to remind everyone that there are still cases out there.

yes there are colds and flus too.

What are you implying? Zero covid before ending restrictions?

also the omicron surge gave so many a personal perspective on the severity of covid in their families -- for many (particularly of the vaccinated), it was a cold or even asymptomatic.

For this reason (in addition to ready availability of vaccinations), the public health authorities have moved away from really caring about cases. Perhaps you should move away from that, too.

+100

I really think this is why masking in school will end sooner rather than later. I have been living normally (besides where masks are required) for over a while. All of the very Covid cautious people I know got omicron in December. It was barely a cold for most and no more than a few days of feeling flu-like for some. They are all over being cautious because of it.

Have you guys seen this chart? https://twitter.com/mcccanm/status/1500588997600428034?s=21
It is so funny it probably deserves its own thread, but I’ll just post it here for now.

Agreed. Amazing. As is DC’s pairing with Burlington. I wish it weren’t so, but DC is going to “win” this tournament.

Wow I didn’t realize that many school districts still require masks

Are the rules that your district loses if you drop mask mandates indoors?

How could it not? Its not only unnatural, its unnecessary and completely counter to what every other developed nation has done. This is not normal.

THIS. The US has been an outlier in the world and now DC is an outlier in the US.

And by all suggestions, we are going to continue to be an outlier. This is pathetic and the people in charge should be ashamed that they aren't following PUBLIC HEALTH GUIDANCE.

This is absurd. It is irrational and insane to be the only ones in the entire country to continue to force children to mask. WTAF. Mayor Bowser should be ashamed of herself.

People are going to laugh at me but whatever. My daughter's preschool here in MA dropped the mask mandate this week. We land in DC at the end of the month. It gives me half a mind not to start her at the pre-K we lined up because I don't want her going back to this, especially in a new classroom environment.

I am a PK parent in DC and I will not laugh at you. That would be sound and responsible decision-making. See if you can find in-home care. It's not worth a few months of PK programming. Hopefully the madness ends this summer and your kid can go next year without this stupidity.

Another DC PK parent, please don't come to DC - zero PK students here have a problem with wearing masks a few more months until they can get vaccinated - it's their crazy, foaming parents that don't want to wear masks. Kids who can be vaccinated should be vaccinated. Kids who cannot yet be vaccinated should wear masks indoors. It's not that deep. And if you won't get your kid vaccinated or have your kid wear a mask inside, home school with the other fundy cultists.

The idea that an adult- and presumably a mother as well- would burden her child and force her into a pawn situation like this is truly horrifying

You will be talked about in therapy for years to come, pp, as your poor kids try to get past what you’re doing to them.
