Students misbehaving at school have nothing to do with any of this. Spend some time with these kids to understand them better vs. spewing your rants. These kids act up in school because they cannot do the work. Some cannot read, write or do basic math. Others have miserable home lives where their needs aren't getting met so they look elsewhere. This has nothing to do with racism or much else. As a county and society, WE failed to meet these kids needs in MCPS when they were young. We as parents (well, not all as some of our kids are thriving) failed to get them the help they needed and give them the attention and support they needed. We are 70 year PAST the 50's. Stop with the blame game and do your part. We cannot even get parents to act responsibly and wear masks and support masking in the schools let alone be attentive parents. And, this has nothing to do with race or class as you have bad parents in every group. So, back to the question. What are you recommending be done? What are you willing to do to be part of the solution? Some of us have spent many years working with these kids. Its not as simple as offering counseling in high school to stop the bad behavior. You need to catch this young and get these kids needs met. |

But your last sentence says it all, much more money and resources need to be devoted to helping them while young. The implication here is that it's too late to be able to do much once they're in middle and high school. I'm fairly certain the data backs this up, namely that we are spending tremendous resources on these kids in middle/high school with very few positive outcomes. |

The schools suffering the most whether you want to admit it or not are high FARMs schools with a significant number of high needs students coming from unstable environments. And yes, we do have some gangs in our schools. We need our SROs back. Black and brown kids want to be safe too. I don't want to see another text from my child while at school telling me how scared she is. |

Privilege is subjective. Being white isn't giving these kids the "privilege" you think it is. Many can still be neglected at home. Many can still not have their needs met if they struggle in school. Many can have checked out and uninvolved parents. Money isn't everything. Their home lives can be far less stable than a child of a low income family but the neglect and abuse look different. Don't minimize what challenges these kids also have as that is just as much part of the problem and we are seeing the same issues and violence across races right now. Ignoring white kids because you decided they are privileged is doing to do far more harm than good. We are at a high farms school and in the minority in terms of families and many of these kids come from great families, very well behaved and are good kids. Maybe try getting to know them vs. judging them based off skin color and assuming they don't have good lives or "privileges." Most kids would trade money for having good involved parents any day. We absolutely need our SRO's back but it still isn't going to fix the problems we are seeing in schools. We need to start with supporting these kids in elementary school, catching the problems, making sure their needs get met and not waiting until middle or high school to have the specialized reading and math classes to play catch up. Any child NOT reading in 1st grade should be given a full educational evaluation and have services tailored to their needs. If they need a reading interventionist every day for 2 hours a day, that is what we as a community should be pay for. As a parent of a SN child and as someone who has worked with these kids, what we are doing now is why we are seeing the problems we do. Our child is successful now because we spent a small fortune on services and made sure they were on grade level as we also worked with them at home. Not all parents are willing or able so that is the first place we need to start. (and keeping things like the free meals) Its shameful how much money our county and MCPS have and how little we actually do for these kids. MCPS, MoCo and the parents (who are able but not willing as there ae some parents just not capable) are all to blame for these kids failing. |

I care and have done far more than you. But, I am not going to victimize anyone. What have you done? What is you fix? You only ramble as to being a savior but you have done nothing to save them. What is your fix? These kids who misbehave are not going to be fixed by a one time chat. If you actually worked with them and spent time with them you’d know that. It states in elementary school and at home. But, it’s easier to blame than fix you. No, you don't. You victimize them since you belittle and don't care about their plights. So, instead of coming up with solutions, you offering to volunteer or work in a helping profession you just use your same talking points making these kids victims. No wonder we have so many problems. You don’t even have any ideas or suggestions. Nice. Try spending some time with these kids. You might learn something. We have so many problems because of people like you who refuse to acknowledge that we have a systematic problem with police in this country, who like the status quo and who would love to return to the 1950s. In Montgomery County, we have so many problems because the activists refuse to acknowledge the good that police do, especially for lower income communities where crime is more prevalent. We have so many problems because activists think police are exactly the same in 2021 as they were in 1971. You have succeeded in removing police from many areas, and the result is a crime increase. Specifically, a violent crime increase. And who's it hurting the most? People of color. We are an intelligent county. I've seen positive outcomes with kids I've worked with but it took a huge commitment from the adults and getting them a neuropsych, therapy, tutors and much more to get them back on track. These kids need adults who believe in them. But, very few kids get that level of support to be successful. We need to catch learning disorders in K-1st. We need to catch mental health and behavior issues and provide support as soon as they start. We need to stop socially passing kids and create more programs so they can get the help and support they need so they can graduate and have a future. We need to make sure every child can read, write and do basic math before leaving elementary school. But, our schools are too large and don't have the "right" kind of supports to do that. And, many parents believe the schools should handle everything. We need to hire more reading intervention specialists, more SLP's, more OT/PT's. We need to hire behavioral specialists. We need to hire more counselors/social workers. We need to hire more special education teachers. We need to reduce class sizes so teachers have more time to work with all kids. We need to go back to having gifted and honors classes so smart kids don't get bored and check out. We need to meet these kids where they are at and help them be successful. But, we also need SRO's as we don't have those things and even if we do, there will always be kids who fall in-between the cracks or cannot be helped no matter how hard people try. And, most importantly, we need parents to be parents. We need parents to partner with the schools (which not all schools allow which is another issue). We need parents to make sure kids show up prepared, do their homework, and help as needed. And, monitor their kids and have consequences for bad behavior. This isn't an SRO or nothing issue. This is a much bigger and broader issue and even if we bring back the SRO's, the real question is how do we prevent these things from happening. |

No, we don't need SROs back and Black and Brown kids don't feel safe around them. We need more guards, counselors etc... and call the police when it is ABSOLUTELY necessary. You want SROs back so Ian and Madison can feel safe. You could not care less about the well being of Black and Brown kids. You are repeating the same old sad story like when y'all pretending you wanted school open in person for the well being of poor Black and Brown kids, please. |

Stop making this about race. All kids deserve to feel safe, not just those of specific skin colors you choose as your talking points. What is the difference if we have SRO's or security guards? They are basically the same thing. But, bottomline is they are NOT providing more funding for more security guards or counselors and the SRO's are probably funded by the police vs. MCPS. And, bring in more security will make things physically safer but you still aren't addressing the underlying problems. Schools have counselors and security guards and are having these issues. There is more to it. |

For the love of God, PLEASE stop talking on behalf of all black people. I'm.black and my kid is black. We are not Madison or Ian and we want SROs back. You do not know what it's like to get text messages from your child begging for us to pick her up from school because of rumors that some gang fight is about to start or because she's scared from going through another lockdown. |
