Dog just peed in his crate!

Anonymous
One year old crate trained dog, we’ve had him since he was 9 weeks and he has never done this.
He had his long walk at 2pm, and usually has a short walk at 10pm, but we had a meeting and crated him in the evening, and came back at 8pm to a large puddle and subdued dog. We always crate him when we leave him alone, otherwise he shreds paper and gnaws chair legs, and often do this in the late afternoon.

The only difference is that this time I gave him a frozen sausage treat, and not his usual nylon bone. Do you think this treat made him pee? Or is he sick?

2 until 10?! Could you hold your pee that long? I know it’s what you usually do, but how is that nice to the dog? Why wouldn’t you bring him out at dinner time?

It was probably anxiety of you being gone.

Did he go out between 2pm and now? Not a walk, just a quick pee before he went into his crate?

This. He needed to go outside after he ate and (I assume) drank.

You left him for too long.

Poor pup.

You left him for much too long. No dog should be left for that long without a break, much less a one-year-old.

OP here.

Thanks, but he’s a large breed and has never had any trouble with this schedule. 7am, 2pm and 10pm has been his usual walk schedule for at least 3 months now. We also often leave him in his crate at around that time, for that length of time.

I’m worried he’s sick, or that the frozen sausage was too much water and made him pee? Although to me the latter seems far fetched because he often drinks when released from his crate in the evening and doesn’t go out until 10 anyway.

To clarify, I work from home. He was in his crate for an hour when we left the house.

If he is only out of his crate for 3 short sessions a day he probably isn't drinking nearly enough water. He might have a urinary tract infection. Poor guy.

Do you ever wake up in the middle of the night and have to pee? Do you automatically think you’re sick?

Pup was embarrassed/ashamed he peed in his crate. That why he was acting subdued

He is crated for less than two hours at a time, and not every day.

It’s all explained in my op.

Can you all please read the actual post? Thank you.

Sausage is really salty. Was this a dog treat or people food? How much of it did he eat?

You might want to call the emergency vet or your vet's after hours line.

It was human food that I cut up, put in a kong and froze, as a long lasting treat he could havevwhile we were away. If I give him something room temp, he’ll eat it in 5 seconds. I wanted this to last. I have done this successfully with cheese, which he loves. I think the sausage might be saltier, though.
