Working from home—how to stop random snacking?

Anonymous
I work from home and I find my biggest hurdle in losing this weight is easily assessable snacking. When I was working in an office, I brought my lunch and that was all I had to eat. So much easier to portion control. As it is now, if I make a bowl of soup, I tend to add a slice of bread, and maybe even a small salad, because it’s there. Or a handful of crackers, because they’re there.

I’m thinking about packing a lunch every evening, and that’s all I’ll eat from 9-5, until dinner. But HOW do I stop myself from going into the kitchen and snacking? I tend to sit at the kitchen table to work because the light at the door wall is abundant and I don’t feel as closed off as in the N facing office.

Any tips, please!

Would forcing yourself to write down all your daytime food help?

I don't sit in the kitchen.
I write out what I'll eat for breakfast, snack and lunch on my phone.

I don’t buy things I know that I will eat. No crackers, triscuits, or good bread! I do eat breakfast and drink a lot of water. That keeps me full until it’s lunch time. I have to have good choices on hand and a plan.

Don't buy any snacks. Just shop for fruits, vegetables and meat.

Thanks for the responses!

I’ll eat my kids snacks! A handful of Goldfish, crackers, one Oreo won’t hurt... I’m the worst!

I work in my kitchen because I just need to. I need the natural light and lack of claustrophobia. I go nuts in my office.

I’ve tried My Firness Pal, but I don’t even feel bad if I have a terrible day!

Drink tea, take a 5 min walk. You're looking for perks and breaks....food is the easiest but not the only option. And, make sure you have an appetizing lunch.

When my fridge door handle broke it was rude awakening to go back to the office .

I never shop shop for groceries while hungry and never buy ''snacks'' aka junk food. I keep food that I need to cook from scratch.

I work from home as well and struggle with this. Some things that help me -
I don’t eat my kids snacks. I treat certain foods I have for the kids the same as I would a roommate’s food.
I have had luck with intermittent fasting - not eating from 8pm until 12pm or 1pm the next day. I do Tuesday and Thursday because those days I have meetings that keep me distracted.
I have the best luck writing down everything I eat.
If I have a lot of long, boring conf. calls that usually send me snacking / grazing I paint my nails or chop veggies for dinner.

I also WFH and have found intermittent fasting helps for me.

Don't buy snacks if you can;t control yourself.

Why are you buying unhealthy snacks for kids? It's a terrible habit they are starting in childhood. My kids eat fruit and cheese, etc. for snacks. My kids may eat "junk" at their friends' houses, but never at home. They don't ask for it because it is not a part of our regular lives. Just like they don't ask for birthday cake when it's not a birthday.

I work from home as well and like to sit in the kitchen. I like "multiple" things to eat while on calls. I used to eat jelly beans. Now its blue berries, raspberries, grapes. If I want something salty I eat olives or cucumber slices. I have a ramekin and whatever fits in that is my afternoon snack.

Eat a big-protein breakfast, whether you eat at 7 am or 11am. It's amazing how filling a couple eggs can be. Pair it with Greek yogurt a little later if you are feeling hungry still. always plain -- add your own fresh fruit if necessary. The fruity-yogurt has tons of sugar in it.

Protein fills you up. It's tough for me as I am vegetarian and love my carbs but I had to get serious about what i eat since even lots of exercise did not seem to make a difference in my weight.
