This is fine, looks nice. Her being the first lady and her dh are inappropriate in every other way but the outfit is OK, those are fancy pants

It's really not. This was Usha at the same event:

That's just from the waist up but you can see in the pic of her below she is in a floor length gown:

Second-in-Command's wife is in a gown and you're in pants and a blouse? An evening tux like the one she wore last admin would've worked, this is just too casual.

The hate directed at the sartorial choices of Melania Trump is just spillover from political resentment, except that one time she wore the "I don't really care" jacket, which was genuinely offensive.

Melania dresses well. Pants are a perfectly acceptable choice for State Dinners, if they're fancy enough. Usha is limited in her choices if she's pregnant, and historically has not dressed well at all. Usha matches her husband is terms of charisma and appearance.

When was a gown the only choice for women at formal events? That line of thought is very regressive, and I think it shows that where Melania is concerned, some so-called progressives will just run their mouth before their brains. And I'm a progressive. I don't admire anything about Melania except her fashion and the way she wears clothes. Give credit where credit is due.

I like the silver pants! Were her shoes gold or was that just the lighting. I don't like silver pants with gold shoes.

I think that's a massive overstatement. Disliking a particular outfit, or even someone's style in general, doesn't mean you resent them politically. Hillary Clinton dresses like shit for the most part and I voted for her.

When was a gown the only choice for women at formal events? That line of thought is very regressive...

No one said a gown was the only choice for women at formal events anywhere in this thread. In fact, Hope Hicks famously executed pants at a black tie event flawlessly:

She's also a Republican and I think she looked fabulous in pants at a black tie event. So, no, I don't just have political resentment or think women have to wear gowns.

I don't admire anything about Melania except her fashion and the way she wears clothes. Give credit where credit is due.

Again, disliking one outfit doesn't mean you dislike someone's entire style. I think Melania dresses great 99.99% of the time and would put her up there as one of our more stylish first ladies, along with Jackie and Michelle. I think this was a rare miss, and barely a miss, because I like it, it just wasn't formal enough. Sparkle =/= formal in terms of dress code.

I was going to say that dress she wore to a Kennedy Center premiere (not of her movie, of something else) would've been great but upon googling "Melania Trump black dress" I found this stunner that she wore to their 2024 NYE gala:

100/10, no notes. This looks incredible on her.

So thinking one pair of pants didn't fit the occasion is not giving her credit for dressing well because of political resentment even though a) she's a Democrat too, to hear some of the shit she says and b) I've said dozens of times in this thread I love her style?

Look, let's all ignore antagonistic political actors who insist not liking a pair of pants is just hating conservative women and all celebrate the true triumph of the evening: JD wore a clean shirt! Good job, buddy!

I disagree. I like many of her fashion choices. But wearing pants and a blouse to a black tie dinner is too informal. Has zero to do with her politics.

+1 The silver pants are knocking it out of the park. They are dressy. They look fantastic. Why should a tux be "above" these pants and blouse? The fecal pig excrement in the tux next to her certainly doesn't look better.

+1 I like the pants too but that outfit needs black shoes. And count me in the too casual for black tie column, although I love it that she wears pants all the time because Trump hates it.

I know there are some who may not understand dress codes, but she repeatedly makes an effort to disregard dress codes and choose items that are not appropriate- since she has a staff fur this purpose, one can only imagine she likes to be inappropriate and it’s a way of throwing insult on the event and company included.

Melania’s outfit looks way better than HH in a tux.

Damn that's crazy Usha's outfit is more appropriate than Melania's for once lol.

I don't particularly care for the dress but I like the boatneck/criss cross back on her and black is certainly her color. Plus she's pregnant so i'm being lenient. Good work for once.

HH looks like staff.
Melania’s shoes don’t match and her pants don’t fit correctly…although I love them.
