Hello I was recently invited to a family wedding reception at the Chevy Chase Club in Montgomery County. Growing up in MoCo in the 80's people always said the club was racist. Not like the structural racism in society, but like out-right racism, ie we don't let black people in. Documentation from back then does seem to support this. I am now married to an African-American woman and feeling uncomfortable about attending. I don't want to rock the boat too much with the family, and want to make sure that if we don't go because the reception is being held there, I am not just going off of stuff I heard growing up. Any thoughts on the club still being racist? |
I mean of course it's still racist but I'm sure they have some black people and jews now. It's 2018. An Old might hand your wife an empty glass but no one will say anything out loud.
The whole neighborhood is deeply and structurally racist. That was the point of the neighborhood. It's its raison d'etre. Not that long ago! The Old at the wedding will remember. But a lot of the people who live there are perfectly nice. |
It's like, is Shaw still a "black neighborhood"? Kind of, but not really. You'll be fine. |
The only two couples I know that are members are biracial. Both are white/Asian couples. So no, I don't think they're racist. |
lol I moved to Shaw in 08. Thanks for the perspective. |
oh girl that's not it |
My in-laws are members and I find it incredibly uncomfortable to meet them there for dinner. The only black and brown people who are there are behind the bar or waiting tables. It is very, very, very weird. I still think you should go with your AA wife and strike one small blow for integration. |
I’m AA and I’ve been there several times with a member. The staff was very nice and friendly (most were white). What I noticed were the white female members were nice but many of the white male members would stare in judgement. I was usually the only AA there. For a wedding it will be fine. |
This. Why doesn’t OP ask his wife if she wants to go, since she’s the one who is AA? Her level of comfort is what is most important in this scenario. |
+1 "I'm not racist. I married an Asian lady" is not a real thing. |
At least it isn't Burning Tree |
They are very conservative as well which helps be accepted if you’re a minority there, according to friends that belong there. |
One day it will be sport to use dogs on those people in CC. I can't wait. |
Say hi to Brett Kavanaugh- sexist Club too I guess. |
It’s where Clinton and Vernon Jordan went to, in their own words, “talk about pussy” so makes sense. |
