Surprised this doesn't exist already. DC has a fairly large deaf/hard of hearing population.

This would also be much appreciated by non-native English speakers! There are some movies we avoid seeing in the theater bc there’s no hope spouse will understand the plot without subtitles.

With a deaf sibling I'm always surprised why this wasn't done nationally 30 years ago.... the resources and technology were definitely there.

It's amazing how many places would benefit from captioning announcements, too. Imagine being deaf or hard of hearing at the airport with all the announcements and you have no clue what's going on?

Say what??!!

So now everyone can be subtracted to distracting captioning? Oh joy. As if the movie theatre experience wasn’t already bad enough, with overpriced food, talkers, texters, and hooligans. Now I get to see closed captioning, too!

Why don’t they just cut to the chase and just ban theaters. It’ll save time from them going out of business.

You are a terrible person. We should be striving to make our society MORE inclusive and accessible-not less.

According to the article, “The bill would require theaters with more than three screens to show each movie with open captions four times a week. Those with fewer screens would be required to show fewer captioned screenings.”

I’m sure you’ll be able to find a screening that won’t inconvenience you.

I'm hearing impaired (totally deaf in one ear, partially deaf in the other). I can't watch TV or a movie at home without subtitles. I don't think movie theaters should do this, and I don't think any person who is against it is "terrible".

The number of hearing impaired people in the world is not large, and it is not necessary to cater to them (including ME) at the expense of annoying everyone else.

I am in favor! Some of the movies are so quiet that even my kids who don't have a hearing impairment can't hear it. I am hearing impaired.

Captions are distracting. Just give peoples who need them little devices. Sometimes “inclusion” is overrated.

Did you read the linked article? There are “little devices” (caption glasses) which tend to glitch or otherwise not work, causing the patron to miss parts of the movie. That’s probably more “distracting” for them than captions are for you.

Also, captions won’t be required at all screenings. You absolutely won’t have to see them if you don’t want to. This accessibility won’t inconvenience you.

the federal government has no power to mandate closed captioning in theaters

I guess I just always assumed there were special times for deaf patrons to view captioning in movies.

The worst captioning is on the news at night. It's SO bad almost every night. I would think the news could should do captioning better because they serve a purpose and it's not just entertainment.
