| I heard that there a proposal somewhere to consider moving the magnet programs at Blair to Kennedy or possibly even Springbrook. Increase diversity at Kennedy and access to magnet level for those under represented students. Increase participation from up county students in the magnets. Alleviate overcrowding at Blair for in boundary students without moving neighborhoods out of Blair. Reduce bus costs and run magnet buses counter commute path for traffic. |
| Where did you hear this? Today seems to be the day for completely unsubstantiated rumours about DCC Schools. |
| Not an unreasonable proposal. Would stink for Takoma Park magnet families |
It sure does. What's up with that? |
| So would they move all of the staff? |
Must be the weather. |
| How about all the lab facilities? And up county students go to Poolesville not Blair.. I don't see why it would reduce bussing costs. They are not that far away from each other. I'd have to see a link... |

OP here I heard it from a friend who is active in the PTA, education policy and local politics. Not today a few weeks ago. The thread about rumors around TPMS reminded me.
I guess they could move the middle school magnet if they move the high school magnet or just bus kids north instead of bussing kids south. Is there a MS in the Kennedy cluster that is projected to be under capacity or just near capacity? |
Why? |
| If they are doing it for next year (which I really doubt). I hope they decide in time to inform this years 8th graders before they have to make decisions. I also hope they would not make Blair 2020 seniors move for their senior year. |
Why You can move the entire magnet program from one school building to another and it does not change several things - 1) these kids are highest achievers 2) the parents are committed to and prioritize their kids education 3) they have a decent SES 4) the parents are usually well educated. 5) they are used to travelling long distances for education What do you think will happen to these families? Will their children automatically become low achieving? Or will the families suddenly start spending education money on online gambling and hair extensions? |
| I think they should replicate the same magnet program and also move it to a W school in Bethesda. |
| If it moves to Springbrook wouldn't that mean no one in the DCC or down county could attend? |
Would never happen. Those schools are wealthy, overcrowded and development is growing. Kennedy and Springbrook are projected to have capacity. The Bethesda schools don't provide any racial diversity or under represented students. Kennedy is the perfect example of a poor school. Placing the DCC magnet in the poorest school would bring opportunities to those students. Blair is projected to be 600-700 students over capacity and its already too big. It can't get bigger something has to give way. |
Just guessing but that is probably why Kennedy would be the first choice. If it was Springbrook it could be open to the DCC. MCPS makes up the rules on which clusters can apply. |
