Blair Magnet moving to Kennedy or Springbrook

If it moves to Springbrook wouldn't that mean no one in the DCC or down county could attend?

Just guessing but that is probably why Kennedy would be the first choice. If it was Springbrook it could be open to the DCC. MCPS makes up the rules on which clusters can apply.

The magnet has nothing to do with the consortiums. It is open to 16 high schools clusters in the county. The 9 other clusters feed to Poolesville.

I guess they could move the middle school magnet if they move the high school magnet or just bus kids north instead of bussing kids south. Is there a MS in the Kennedy cluster that is projected to be under capacity or just near capacity?

What thread about TPMS rumors?

Who else would do this, if not MCPS?

Any idea when this would happen?
FWIW Blair was a huge reason my kid chose the magnet program over RMIB and over our W school. Kid made the right choice and loves the magnet and the school as a whole. It is a big school but that also means lots of clubs and lots of opportunities to find friends outside of the Magnet. As many DCC posters have noted there are tons of high achieving neighborhood kids zoned for Blair and this makes the non Magnet classes top notch. Kennedy or Springbrook would not be as appealing.

You do realize that you just made a strong argument for why the magnet SHOULD move to Kennedy. If there are plenty of high achieving non-magnet kids at Blair then they will all be fine. Do you really think W parents threatening to pull out of the magnet if it moves to Kennedy is a strong position to take?

There was a time when no one would consider Blair just like you will not consider Kennedy. If your kid's magnet program gets moved to Kennedy to you really think that his performance will drop because he has PE with Kennedy kids? Do you think that there are not even a handful of kids at Kennedy that could do a more rigorous elective or other type of non magnet class with magnet level kids. The magnet kids could create a critical mass to provide some more advanced on magnet courses for Kennedy kids that currently have no options.

I think Takoma Park residents and council members will not let it happen. I learned that TP council members and other gov execs have a lot of power AND influence in MoCo.

The council members THINK they have a lot of power AND influence but they really don't.

Plus moving a magnet program , technically wouldn't even require the exhaustive public vetting that boundary changes require. MCPS and the BOE can open/close or move these whenever they want without the Council or anyone else weighing in. Far easier.

When will an unsubstantiated, sourceless rumor happen?

On the PTA board at my school and I heard this rumor as well.

Or, move so your child can attend. Problem solved.

How could they justify spending $$ to rebuild the labs and facilities when they already exist?

Yes, but my point is that the council has a lot of influence on the BOE. Not public vetting, but calling in favors, stuff like that. I don't care if it moves to Kennedy, I'm just adding an opinion based on what I witnessed in other matters that related to TP vs Moco.

As a resident of the NEC, I would love to see some magnet program moving to our area (Springbrook).

So, the PTAs are spreading a rumor...

The only rumor I have heard is that they will move it to the new Woodward HS..make it all magnet..so they do not have to change any boundaries. Maybe I should start a new rumour thread?
