If you wake up at 5am

Anonymous
what time do you go to bed? I recently switched my hours at work so that I have to be up at 5. Try as I may, I can not get to bed before 9:30 at the earliest and that just is not enough sleep for me. It doesn't seem like in this area with long commutes, waking up at 5 would be that unusual. Are most people who wake up at this time going to bed at 9 or earlier or do they just make do with less than 8 hours?

This is me. And I'm up by 5:15 every morning. But I have never needed a lot of sleep.

Is there anything that you can readjust in your schedule so that you're getting ready for bed at 7:30 or 8:00? Then even if you're only in bed by 8:30-9, you will at least have 8-9 hours of sleep.

Presumably if you're getting to work earlier, then you're also leaving for home earlier. That should give you the same amount of time at home (if not more because hopefully traffic would be better) as you had before the change. If you can get done whatever it is that is keeping you up then maybe you'll feel better about going to sleep earlier.

If you don't have them, try room darkening shades and Melatonin. I also will share a quirky tip from a friend that he swears works -- he takes 1 Extra-Strength Tylenol (so a half-dose) a half-hour before bedtime and he swears that his body reads this as a signal to go to bed. Whatever works!

I’m in bed within half an hour or so of my 2 y.o. So, 7:30-8 (just got in bed). Will eff around on iPad, DCUM, Netflix, etc., and fall asleep around 9:30/10. Nap when I can. Drink a lot of caffeine.

Same. I need a lot of sleep, though. DH can go to bed at 10 or 11 and wake up at 5 just fine.

I just changed to this schedule too, and I have trouble getting to bed before 11. I'm not a night owl, there is just too much to do (and I want some downtime, too). I'm tired.
