Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
And FCPS hired him? |
I know this is a very diverse area, but mostly hispanic in Fall church and Annandale? Please give me a break, these people are cheating too. But that cheating is for acceptance in college as a affirmative action. Do someone is investigating this too? |
The very elite club and college-recruited or pro-track players at the wealthy schools often opt to play for their high school varsity teams, for at least senior year. That said the teams are still nearly impossible to make because all the club players try out and there are never enough spots on jv or varsity. |
The neighborhoods immediately around Annandale HS are largely Hispanic. Have you ever been to the apartment's off of Heritage? Or the condos by 495? Have you seen the Bolivian dance troupes practicing in the church and school parking lots? Noticed the street vendors with the Central American fare at Ossian Hall or in the H Mart and VRE parking lots? Seen the men with the rolling freezer carts selling Central American treats all throughout Annandale? Have you done a volunteer shift at ACCA? The Hispanic community isn’t hiding. They’re a vibrant part of the community. Even the wealthier elementary schools in the pyramid have a significant Hispanic population. None of them are majority white. It’s an amazing, awesome, diverse community. I love it. |
There isn’t a single one of those majority Hispanic schools where there aren’t white parents advocating behind the scenes for redistricting to reduce the percentage of Hispanic kids. |
Not just white, asains are pushing behind the scene probably even more. |
I’m a white parent and I don’t. I’m pretty sure the friends I have don’t as well. AHS is a fantastic thriving school and a great community with a terrible football team. Because the earlier poster was right, football isn’t big in Latino communities so playing is an upsell and it’s often most kids first time trying it out out. |
Yes. And some of the Annandale players themselves could be learning English concurrently. Were it not for the shenanigans at Hayfield (depending on your point of view), Annandale and the other National District schools might have had a fighting chance at competing for a district title. From now on, Hayfield has a guaranteed sweep of all the other district schools every year. The Nova Sports Podcast posted a good interview with the former head coach, Dick Adams, a local legend. Now retired, he stepped down from coaching at Annandale last year. He spoke about the demographic challenges for football at the school (and the other National District schools) today. Back in the 90s he coached Annandale to two state titles. |
If an area is "largely" a certain group, is it really "diverse?" |
That’s more of a local definition. The schools that are majority Hispanic are seen as the most diverse schools in Northern Va. |
It’s not just the terrible football team. Most of the sports teams are bad now, and the other activities don’t have high level of participation. Annandale does have a very energetic principal but I absolutely know AHS parents who behind the scenes want FCPS to shake up the demographics - which in AHS’s case probably means moving part of Woodson or Lake Braddock to AHS. |
And note that Hispanic can be a person of any race (asian, white, black, etc, as defined by the U.S. Census). |
I wouldn’t be surprised if the just hired FCPS consultants recommend rezoning those outside-the-Beltway neighborhoods back to Annandale. They should have never been rezoned in the first place, and the former principal (during the rezoning controversy 15 years ago) spoke about the impact on extracurriculars and sports. He was shouted down. |
| The Hayfield coach posted that Annandale should be congratulated for not giving up during the 65-0 rout but included a highlight reel of Hayfield scoring again and again and Annandale getting pummeled. The guy pretends to be classy but he’s rubbing his program in everyone’s faces. It’s just a matter of time before he’s chased out just like he was from Prince William. |
To Overton’s credit, he did not run up the score nearly as much as Marshall did in week one. That was horrifying. |
