Here is how to transfer to any high school in the area

Use the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Act

“Anyone who lacks a fixed, regular and adequate night time residence is considered homeless.”. The word regular can be very loosely interpreted and admins do not push back on any claims.

This is (allegedly) being used by a lot of football players to transfer from Freedom HS in Prince William to Hayfield in FCPS to follow coach Overton. Freedom won back to back state titles.

Not sure why he would leave - but he’s now at Hayfield and 25-30 of his former players from a different county are now there.

I do not know where to look to verify, but I have heard the same indirectly from FCPS staff that the percentage of students at Hayfield classified as "homeless" has increased substantially.

I dont like it, but I accept transferring within the County for athletics, but my taxes are supposed to go up $500 this year. I will be damned if this money is going towards the education of PWCo kids.

This Hayfield football thing is the worst kept secret among high school teachers in the county. Everyone at a recent training I went to was talking about it. How is Hayfield not getting in trouble for this? You’d think that FCPS wouldn’t want to pay to educate 20 out-of-county students.

Are the kids really homeless? If so, I don't see what the problem is. If they're not, why isn't the school or county checking?

It would take an admin with serious job security to make a kid prove they are homeless - it’s insane they are going that route but nothing shocks me anymore.

Freedom HS is about 15 miles from Hayfield and you pass 3-4 other schools on the way.

I hope the kids aren’t homeless but if they are, then they are going to Hayfield for no other reason than to play football.

Qui Tam should exist and be encouraged at the local level. The county may not want to investigate, but an hour or two of research could probably prove the coach brought over players

+1. I teach in FCPS but not anywhere near Hayfield. This situation is talked about all the time, and students know about it too.

I’m 90% sure there’s nothing to can do to stop them getting that money - and taxes go to much more than schools.

Actually there may be something being done about it apparently. According to an artile in the Fairfax Times today, FCPS is conducting an investigation into the issue at Hayfield.

Hopefully school social workers are following up if there are legitimately homeless kids they should be getting additional services.

Average SAT is 1088, they aren't transferring to Hayfield for the academics.

The parents will all regret this once they realize CPS is going to get involved. Also, I hope they aren't claiming their "homeless" teens on their taxes as dependents, while they live in a nice house in PWC, because that sounds like tax fraud.

This can be easily resolved.

But it won't be because the big sports schools do the same thing.
