It is the highest division. They are class 6 schools.

But Annandale, Lewis etc are much smaller schools than other FCPS HS. Chantilly HS has 3000 students. A school with 2000 students is in the same class as a school with 3000 students?

Final was 65-0.

So last night my kid said they ran the clock AND then also ended the game early. Is that correct?

Some of those schools should technically be in class 5. Maybe fcps doesn't want to draw attention to how absurd it is to have a 1600 kid school a mile away from a 2800 student school.

What matters is 10-12 enrollment. This is the 2022 division table: https://drive.google.com/file/d/18tXskxsDUTfyw6i7ke4cQWmzVWtAOoSW/view?usp=sharing

Chantilly is at 2100 in grades 10-12. Hayfield is actually smaller than Annandale on this chart.

1500 in 10-12 is the straight numerical cutoff. Mt Vernon, TJ and Lewis are the only FCPS schools that “play up” due to travel time to other D5 schools.

Yes that is correct. See VHSL rule 68-4-1

PM 68-4-1 (1) FOOTBALL POINT RULE - When a thirty-five (35) point differential is reached at half-time or at any point during the second half, the game clock will continue to run anytime there is an incomplete pass, the runner goes out of bounds or the offensive team obtains a first down.
Additionally, when the mercy rule is in effect and there is a:
- Change of possession the clock will stop for substitutions and setting the chains and then start
on the ready for play signal.
- Score, the clock will stop for the extra point. The clock will run by rule during the subsequent
free kick, then after setting the chains, started on the ready for play signal.
- Charged timeout, the clock will stop and then start on the ready for play signal following the timeout.
Should the point differential subsequently be reduced to less than thirty-five points, game officials will discontinue the use of this timing adjustment. This adoption will be utilized during the regular season and playoff games and at all levels of play (varsity and sub-varsity). This adjustment may not be utilized when Rule 3-1-3 is in effect.
Rule 3-1-3 states the following: ART. 3...A period or periods may be shortened in any emergency by agreement of the opposing coaches and the referee. By mutual agreement of the opposing coaches and the referee, any remaining period may be shortened at any time, or the game terminated.

Class 6 schools in Virginia are the largest by population. Hayfield just happens to be assigned to the district (ie conference) with the weakest class 6 schools, the National District. The district is very weak due to demographics that pose challenges to strong sports programs. Hayfield is the outlier in its district since it serves a large military community and large middle class. Annandale, Lewis, Falls Church, Justice, and the others, are the weakest in Fairfax County. (I believe the just hired FCPS boundary consultant may try to create boundaries that bring a more wealthy demographic to these schools, rezoning neighborhoods away from Madison, Marshall, McLean, Woodson, etc. That process is underway.)

They often have good soccer teams.

They can’t force other people to send their kids to majority Hispanic schools. They’ll just leave or go private.

He didn't go to Hayfield for strategic reasons.

Because his friend had just been hired on as principal of Hayfield, and his friend would hire him as coach AND for a full time job, as well as hire his relatives and various hangers-on like the team manager. And, a friend as the principal will look the other way when you use the school property for your AAU team.

And, these kids want film for college recruiters, obviously they will get great clips playing much weaker teams.

And thus why the Latino heavy schools usually have more success in soccer (because the rich white kids are playing for clubs instead of Langley or Oakton).

McLean was the state runner-up last year and the winner, Cosby, is an affluent school in Midlothisn outside Richmond. But Lewis was good, too.

They don’t have more success than the rich white schools, however, the Latino heavy schools are more successful in soccer than football, basketball, or lacrosse.
