FCPS Early Release Mondays

Pushing back the start date of school by a week or several days would violate IEPs. The iEPS are all written with services beginning on the first day of school per the calendar that sped teacher had. FCPS cannot do this. I wish they could! But they can't, because of special education services.

+1

Based on the few documents I’ve seen from the state, the trainings aren’t all going to be released at the beginning of the year. They will be released throughout the year. I wonder if that’s because all of this is being put together in the fly? All of this is so last minute from the state.

Yeah. These trainings don’t exist. Nobody can do them yet.

LOL....this is what teachers say all year long. It is in fact depressing.

And, I don’t blame them one bit! Teachers should be paid more in total compensation and paid for all PD time without question. And, parents’ voices should be heard. The school calendar needs to change for this year to provide less schedule interruptions for kids and parents and start later or end earlier for the year. Too much time is wasted on busy work and movies.

Nonsense. I might think you were a troll, but that's a ridiculous claim even by Dcum troll standards.

How much is this training going to cost FCPS? The worst of this is that, 1) the literacy science isn't actually settled 2) this kerfuffle has been created by various for-profit curriculum companies all vying to have different school districts buy their multi-million dollar curriculums and pay for their expensive curriculum training 3) the only people that are going to suffer are the kids that will end up with still less education.

Girl, are you new here? That comment isn’t even in spitting distance of DCUM troll standards.

Because then FCPS wouldn't have enough school days for elementary kids as required by state law.

Blaming problems with public schools on children with special needs is an incredibly common pastime of Dcum.

June 2024 - VDOE Virginia Literacy Updates - page 11 under planning - the scope has been narrowed to K-5 for 24-25 to do the training & implement:

6-8 will be added next year.

Does this mean that 6th grade in elementary schools are off the hook for now? We’re signed up for the summer training. But is the implementation being moved to the following year?

Summer training is for basal. Modules will be released 6-8 in fall.

+1, 6th grade is included in the ES plan for Mondays.

Don’t worry they’ll have the 6th graders watch the K-5th graders

This isn’t the curriculum training.

Yeah, it would be sooo much better to skip this training, save the money, and keep those kids in school for 21 hours (out of 1,000 for the year). No need to learn about teaching phonics or fluency. Let’s just keep doing what we’ve been doing for the last 25 years. Because THAT has worked so well. /s
