Can you please describe exactly what happened here? Did you make a complaint?

I went to high school in the 90’s and I can remember probably less than 1% LGBT’s at my public school. My kids are 11 and 12 and not LGBT so far, but I’m just wondering if it is more prevalent nowadays, more prevalent at the independent schools, or are we just talking about it to ensure they are protected and others are educated about them?
They are important members of our society and should be valued and protected.

It’s fashionable nowadays since it counts as diversity, and it’s an easy claim for a white UMC family to make.

at our K-8 we have quite alot of MS exploring LGBTQ

+2 Especially the girls! Over 1/3 of the girls in 8th at our small k-8.

Yeah, but let’s say only 6% of the US population identifies as LGBT, I wouldn’t think the schools would need more than 6% to say they are inclusive.

OP we applied to FH and toured. DC accepted. Admissions were lovely. Campus was beautiful with lots of natural light in new MS building. Class offerings seemed impressive. We ended up declining because we knew a few families there and just didn't think that the cohort was academically advanced enough to justify the $$ over current public. We may revisit in high school or apply to Potomac, as well, at that time. We are also considering Madeira and one boarding schools for 9th so keeping options open. In meantime, we didn't think FHS was appealing enough to spend the money in MS. Just a personal opinion. I do have friends there who love it.

Potomac is more selective.

…which does not necessarily equate with quality.

Sounds like being LGBT is a hook

It's really not a hook. It's certainly fine and welcome, but not a hook.

GDS specifically asks if child, siblings or parents identify as LGBTQ+. Sounds like a hook to me, at least at GDS.

We are in Virginia and looking. I am hearing better things about Flint Hill in more current posts. How do these schools compare today. Is this old post stil relevant?

Things have gotten worse not better. FH has fallen to the 19th best high school in the WDC area.

If you’re basing this on the recent WBJ rankings, they just repurposed the Niche rankings by applying slightly different weights, yet somehow ended up with the same rankings. Both sets of rankings are complete and utter nonsense. Other than perhaps BIM which should suffer for lack of continuity, there is very little that distinguishes the top 10 schools from each other in overall quality of education. Same for the second 10. They have different styles and different strengths and weaknesses, but rank ordering them is a fool’s errand.

Are you saying the top ten are 1st tier and 11-20 are 2nd tier?

We're happy at FH. School promotes a growth-mindset. Works for us.

PP here. I’d say *in general* the top 10 are more “better” than the second 10. But the overall differences are narrow, and not the gulf many on here seem to think exists between them. And there are exceptions. I would much sooner send my DC to Maret or WIS or FHS or SSSAS or SAES, than say, BIM or Episcopal. I don’t even know what Pinnacle Academy is, so can’t comment on that one. Putting schools into bands or tiers is problematic too, but not nearly as reductive as rank ordering them.

Coming in #19 is coming in #19.

What is a "growth mindset?" It is most important to me that a school is rigorous and prepares students well for the challenges of college.
