Covid at UVA

I am sorry, but seeing your friends outdoors and giving your power point over Zoom are not true hardships. What about the generations that went overseas when bombs and napalm were flying? That is true sacrifice. I get it that prom pictures are nice, but the tone of some of these posts show how very spoiled we have become.

Where would America be if those who came before us were not willing to give even conveniences up for the greater good?

You do know that a lot of these "older relatives" are out living their lives as normal? Go check out any flight to Europe and it will be filled with many of these "elderly that we need to save" jetting off to the have the time of their lives. Meanwhile our college students are wearing masks to class and having study abroad opportunities cancelled.

For real. I can’t speak for all old people, but the ones in my life are chomping at the bit to get back on a cruise ship and watching Fox News, getting all worked up kids having to wear masks in school and the liberal agenda at places like UVA. They don’t want young people sacrificing anything for them anymore.

It's not just Fox news watching anti-maskers. My elderly Silent Generation parents wear masks and are cautious, but now that they are vaccinated, eating dinner with their friends or seeing them indoors is unfathomable. They are thrilled their grandkids are attending college in person on campuses where vaccinations and masks are required, but wouldn't think of asking for young people to give up more than that.

It's funny, my siblings and I were worried that our parents weren't cautious enough after they were vaccinated. Even though they are at risk, they made me understand that living in the safest possible way in isolation isn't really living at all. They were dying in isolation and recognize what a sacrifice it was for kids to curtail their activities.

PP who said, "Everyone who has been willing to get vaccinated has done so," is just plain wrong.

On August 24, it was announced that:

<<On average, about 450,000 Americans a day are getting their first jab, up from 260,000 a little more than a month ago, Jeff Zients, the White House Covid-19 Response Team coordinator.>>

He was probably extrapolating from his little bubble (or trusting his biased brain instead of data).

The rates have continued to rise in September....but just under 50% of college-aged kids are vaccinated.

College mandates and well informed parents who raised children to care about the greater good could make a huge dent in that.

Delta, since it is so contagious, will act as a natural "vaccine" to expose more people to COVID.

Australia, one of the most strict countries in the world, is not doing well because very few vaccinate and most were not exposed to previous variants due to strict lockdown.

It is not if but when everyone will be expose to COVID-19. Either you do it with some vaccine immunity or alone with your natural immunity.

What do you want kids to do other than get vaccinated and wear masks?

Adding - get tested if symptomatic. What else is there?

She just said, only half are vaccinated.

They could also avoid large indoor parties, when they have the option of socializing outdoors. Common sense stuff.

Not "soul crushing."

Half the students are vaccined? How is that possible?

Some will die, some will have shortened lives, some will have chronic conditions and some will not be able to have families or hold a job. In the end, a lot of family lines will die off and human population will be significantly culled. It will be great for the Earth.

A UVA student is far more likely to die from alcohol poisoning than COVID.

That is a myth which WaPo dispelled in 2015. Less than 1% of all nationwide college deaths are due to alcohol poisoning. In contrast, 6% were mentally-health related. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/fact-checker/wp/2015/01/15/the-often-repeated-claim-that-1800-college-students-die-from-alcohol-related-causes/. I know of no alcohol related deaths at UVA in at least the last six years.

Anonymous wrote:Back to the topic, my DD is very sick at UVA. Went to the student health center and the doc said probably a cold. He tested her for COVID and she’ll find out tomorrow morning. He told her tons of kids are sick but the vast majority are not testing positive.

I’m sorry, and I hope she feels better soon and that it is indeed just a cold.

Thank you, test results back with in 12 hours a[b]nd she’s negative.

Great news! Hope she's feeling better soon!

Of course she is. Almost everyone is vaccinated at UVA. OP is just spreading hearsay to create trouble. READ https://news.virginia.edu/content/high-vaccination-rates-pave-way-students-move

I am assuming they mean 50% of college students all around the country. At UVA the percentage is upwards of 97%

Sounds like the OP and some others are just trolls or people mad that college football is being allowed.

Most of us have told our college kids to wear masks inside, avoid large indoor crowds, and get tested if symptomatic. Beyond that, complaining about the behavior of others and starting rumors about "superspreader events" without evidence is neither productive nor healthy. If OP's DD feels unsafe, perhaps she have her DD head home or write to UVA leadership instead of complaining in this forum.
