Back to the topic, my DD is very sick at UVA. Went to the student health center and the doc said probably a cold. He tested her for COVID and she’ll find out tomorrow morning. He told her tons of kids are sick but the vast majority are not testing positive.

I’m in Charlottesville and teaching at UVA. There is no problem as OP’s hearsay tries to infer. Ignore. All was handled well last year. All is being handled well this year.

Exactly, my vaccinated first year started getting sick Friday, went and got tested immediately, negative with the rapid and confirmed with the PCR . A good amount of other students are getting the same thing. Bottom line is kids have been sequestered for 18 months, now they're all living in a communal dorm, normal crud is taking its course in kids that haven't had a lot of contact. I mean C'mon people, there are viruses in the world other than Covid, stop with the hyperbolic rhetoric about FB games, Trumpers or whatever else you scream about. Either the vaccinations work or not, get a frigging life and realize sickness is a thing in life and other diseases exist beyond Covid. Life must continue.

As we are seeing with RSV and children, there are definitely consequences to sequestering these students for 18 months. They haven’t been exposed to covid, but they also haven’t been exposed to anything else. It’s not surprising that they’d see a bump in the usual college crud.

Besides, the vast majority of the covid positives at Duke were asymptomatic, and if the positivity rate at UVA is 5%, it’s not likely that they’re missing a ton of cases.

Some will die, some will have shortened lives, some will have chronic conditions and some will not be able to have families or hold a job. In the end, a lot of family lines will die off and human population will be significantly culled. It will be great for the Earth.

It's not surprising to me that they are all getting sick with something, now living in close proximity to a lot of other people for the first time in a year and a half. That doesn't mean throw in the towel and eliminate residential colleges. Most of this sickness is not testing out to be covid.

The same thing happened when my DD worked at a sleepaway camp this summer. All staff were vaccinated plus tested before they arrived. One week in they all had an awful cold (tested, not covid) and then a bunch got strep. I think everyone's immune systems are not in great shape, having not had to deal with the run-of-the-mill bugs for so long.
