I’m getting nervous about school because of delta

With everyone masked my hope is this won't happen. We had so few cases in the spring and super low incidents of spread in schools.

I am very much looking forward to being back 5 days a week and praying this fall is successful.

I’m not worried I’ll get it but pretty concern my kids who are too young to be vaccinated will and I’ll burn through leave having to stay home with them while they’re sick. But like, not worried to the extent I’m gonna help overthrow the school year as OP seems to think.

Agree. I think most teachers have the leave thing on their mind especially with young kids unvaccinated who will need to be out when sick which I think will be more so than last year since so many people were home.

I’m worried that I’ll end up home with my young children and will not be able to find a sub. Finding a sub was tough pre-pandemic and was impossible last year. My husband can’t take off with them, which means my students will be divided up among my colleagues for days on end if this plays out like I think it will.

We should contact test kids instead of quarantine. It actually reduces already low in-school spread even a little more (per a recent study that may have included delta) and fewer kids have to go home, a HUGE benefit for working families.

They need to change the rules. They can’t do a quarantine and not allow them to test out like this year, especially if wearing masks.

Let me rephrase. With kids having to stay home for any sign of illness like sniffles etc. or even having covid…how are kids supposed to make up the work and get the lessons? I am worried about my child falling behind when he has to miss school for whatever illness he may get. Our school is not good about catching kids up or getting makeup work to kids.

Didn’t the guidelines say that being masked meant you wouldn’t have to quarantine?

Eh, I am a bit worried. I am thinking about getting another round of vaccines. I don’t think they keep a database of who got the shots, so I can just walk into a drug store and get them, no?

The vaccine already has a 95% efficacy rate. Unless they are now recommending booster shots, I think you're good.

Well, I got it back in February and there is some news circulating that a booster might be a good idea… i just don’t want to wait until Fauci decides it would be politically expedient to recommend it.

I just got a "third" shot (by doing it in another state & saying it was my first). I did it to boost my immune system before back-to-school. I feel great about doing it. No regrets. My 2nd shot was back in January, I am over 50 & have a health concern, I want to be back in the classroom (as I was last year), I read about the waning efficacy after six months. Boosters are coming. Pfizer says that the 3rd shot boosts your antibody levels 5 to 10 fold. I feel I'm ahead of the game which will allow me to do my job in confidence.

Thanks. I needed that advice. Do they keep tabs on who received Covid shots in VA? Is there a state database?

The vaccine works. Really, it does. Get the vaccine and drop the mask.

Masks work too. The unvaccinated people can wear a mask.

Pick one: Mask or shot or accept the personal risk and move on.

So get the shot *or* wear a mask and open the damn schools,

Chill. The schools aren’t going to close unless kids start dying. Luckily, we have Texas, Florida, and Missouri who can serve as worst case test scenarios for us.

The problem is all our unvaccinated citizens are a breeding ground for new variants, and Delta is like 1000 X transmissible as what we dealt with in the spring. In England, if recent news is correct, forty percent of those hospitalized with COVID were fully vaccinated.

What we need to do is roll out those booster shots stat. Fauci’s directives always seem a month or two behind. I don’t know why people revere him so much.

No, the problem is all the unvaccinated kids who aren't eligible being put together with no precautions. In this area, majority adults are vaccinated.

We're not doing that here.

Yes, we should do that but we won’t because… Dr. Gloria.

Yeah, I think ES kids will be masked.

Yep. I'd say we can count on it.

Again, that was not with the majority being the many times more transmissible Delta strain.

Ok. Let's assume students will constantly have to quarantine. So what is your solution? What would you do differently?

If you had Pfizer, are you supposed to get a third Pfizer shot or a J and J shot?
