Me again. I also use it all because it’s a use it or lose it situation and most people do take all their PTO.

For this reason, I am suspicious of companies that do unlimited. I don’t think they are as generous in encouraging people to take as much time as they want. I think I’d end up with much less than 6 weeks.

World Bank. 30 business days plus all federal holidays plus extra days the president throws our way. We are off for most of the July 4th week, for instance. I never manage to use it all.

I’m a fed. Due to credit hours, I pretty much have unlimited time off.

IT Director at a state university, 4 weeks vacation and 4 weeks sick time. Vacation maxes out at 40 days, sick time at 200. I've been losing sick time for years but I guess I should be happy that I'm healthy.

I should have added that I get all of the standard holidays as well.

+1000 I think "unlimited" is a scam that effectively discourages diligent workers from taking leave.

Work at an NGO. We get 3 weeks to start, 4 after 5 years, 5 after 10. Plus 12 sick days and all but one federal holiday.

Unlimited time off is definitely a scam. I wish more people knew this.

I know that my team will have to pick up my tasks, and with my relatively heavy workload, that would not be fair to them, so I try to cap taking time off at two weeks. Now if my useless boss would agree to fill in for me (he certainly has the bandwidth), I would have no qualms being out for longer, but even if he says he will, all he does is "delegate" it to the rest of my team, which defeats the whole purpose of filling in. Oh well.

Tour boss is playing you for a sucker and it’s working. You don’t owe your coworkers squat. Your boss does, however. As long as you voluntarily cover for tour boss why would anything change?

Why?

I have six weeks as an attorney for a state agency but we are busy and so I typically will take about three (1.5 week summer vacation, various long weekends, sick days, etc.). Duty calls. (I'm working-ish today even though we are off.)

Research shows that people with unlimited leave actually take less leave than people with a defined amount of leave. If the work culture doesn’t actually support people taking their vacation (which is often the case in America) people don’t feel like they can actually take leave. I think when you have a defined amount of leave, you feel more entitled to it than you do when you have an unlimited amount of leave. Plus if leave is unlimited, your don’t actual accrue leave so if you quit or are fired, there’s no chance to be paid out for any unused leave. If your org has a workaholic culture, and you’d otherwise be accumulating leave, you’re effectively leaving money on the table.

Plus 1 million. This is a policy that benefits the employer not the employee.
