4+ weeks of time off: what do you do for work?

Think tank. 8 weeks of leave. This was a priority for me, and I negotiated it as part of my contract.

Big law partner. I have 4 weeks. Take more. Like 8 weeks although I have to work some all of those weeks.

You're effectively part time at that point (assuming you also get around 10 holidays). Breaks down to 4 days a week. Awesome you could negotiate that!

Nurse practitioner. 6 weeks of use or lose time plus 7 holidays and additional days for continuing education.

Why?

Research shows that people with unlimited leave actually take less leave than people with a defined amount of leave. If the work culture doesn’t actually support people taking their vacation (which is often the case in America) people don’t feel like they can actually take leave. I think when you have a defined amount of leave, you feel more entitled to it than you do when you have an unlimited amount of leave. Plus if leave is unlimited, your don’t actual accrue leave so if you quit or are fired, there’s no chance to be paid out for any unused leave. If your org has a workaholic culture, and you’d otherwise be accumulating leave, you’re effectively leaving money on the table.

Plus 1 million. This is a policy that benefits the employer not the employee.

I love leave, have 6 weeks plus all fed holidays, plus Christmas through NYD, but I would basically never work for a place with unlimited leave. In the immortal words of that squid guy from Star Wars: It's a trap!
