Private & Independent Schools
+1. And please provide the details of the systemic racism. parroting MSNBC talking points is not a good debate strategy. |
I understand: "Diversity through segregation." Kids learn to speak up, but only in safe spaces and to people with your skin color - how's that preparing you to deal with the real world? Also, the black & brown kids at SSSAS aren't some marginalized group. Their parents drive Teslas, BMWs and Range Rovers and have professional careers. Notably, most students are from two-parent households that value education. |
So just because they come from well off families, they couldn’t possibly experience racism. As the kid whose teacher assumes their father isn’t in their life, of the kid who is followed around the store by the security guard, or the parents whom other parents assume they get financial aid, etc, etc. These aren’t SSSAS examples per se, but things that happen at every independent school. And out in the world, people don’t care that you are well-off and go to private school. Affinity groups provide community to discuss experiences both in school and out with people who get it which is a good thing, especially when you are in the minority at your school. |

| Not sure what this is all about. Have two DCs there. There are no issues at all. Good discussions. I am a conservative republican and am happy with what they are doing. These posts are either not real parents or people who have gone out of their way to misunderstand. |
calling BS on this post. |
+1. Did you read the book that the APT sent home last Fall? I am paraphrasing but basically says all white people are inherently racist. Including children. You sit on a throne of lies. |
|
“I’m paraphrasing” is likely a tell here. What book are you referring to? Because every criticism of CRT I hear is logically flawed in that it uses a straw man tactic. It takes an exaggerated view of what CRT is and then attacks that version, not the actual theory.
CRT does not attribute racism to white people as individuals or even to entire groups of people. CRT states that U.S. social institutions (e.g., the criminal justice system, education system, labor market, housing market, and healthcare system) are laced with racism embedded in laws and practices that systematically lead to different outcomes by race. If you paraphrase the above to say “white people should feel white guilt” then you’re not genuinely attacking CRT, because that’s not what it says. And it’s disingenuous to suggest it is. |
Wow, I believe a little reading comprehension is in order here. Did I even mention CRT? I was attacking a racist book distributed by SSSAS. The book states in many examples that whites will never be able to overcome their white supremacist attitudes and that they are always going to be “effing racists” that black people “just want to punch.” The book used the actual f word - not exactly appropriate to send out to a high school. The book is 'So you want to talk about race.' I think someone is overly protective of CRT because you know it is BS. |
+100. If you are not lying then you are obviously not involved in your child’s education if you don’t know what this is all about at SSSAS. Sad but there are parents who have no idea that these discussions are going on during history and other classes at the school. When they find out they are stunned. The school has not informed parents of the curriculum change and kids don’t share it with their parents (surprise). Most kids know they need to keep their mouths shut or face the consequences. PP if you are so sure none of this is going on ask the school. That said, I believe as a private school they have a right to teach what they want and families can deny that it’s happening, teach their children otherwise at home or leave. |
The APT doesn't send books home. Any communication or recommendation from the APT is pre-approved or requested by the administration. They did provide a suggested reading list, provided by parent and admin recommendations. I am on the APT board. It has no actual "power" at school, it is basically the volunteer parent group that raises money and organizes events that the school doesn't have staff to do. So just stop. It is not involved whatsoever in ANY curriculum, CRT or otherwise. |
It’s unfortunate that I can’t post the slides and the discussion that were used in my child’s class to talk about how America is systemically racist. So APT Board member please contact the school and inquire about that. |
Ok, you put didn’t “say” CRT, but I’m familiar with the book and it’s central theme is that America’s policitical, economic and legal systems are systematically and institutionally racist, and the disparate effects on POC are there irrespective of any individual biases. So, basically the exact definition of CRT I gave above. And I would have no issue whatsoever with my HS reading that book. I’d welcome it, whether Larla/o agreed with it or not. I might go out and get them a copy today, actually. |
What was the book (title and author)? PP here and I have no idea what you are talking about. That should register to you. It was not that significant. My kids know foolishness when they see it and will ignore it. |
