How old was your daughter when you allowed her to get highlights in her hair?

My daughters can get salon highlights/ nails/ whatever when they can pay for it themselves. They're in upper ES and have no interest in make up or anything yet. I did let them do the temporary hair dye in various colors during quarantine. It washed out after a couple showers and was no big deal.

I would pay for electrolysis or laser if they had thick dark body hair that was embarrassing them or keratin if they had frizzy untamable hair or professional skin care regimens if they had bad acne. That might be vain but I also know how mean other kids can be.

Mom of 2 DD, ages 22 and 16.

Oldest got her hair highlighted for first time at 20, college student. She was home on break and I paid for it.

My youngest is polar opposite - extremely low maintenance, lives in sports gear and pulls hair into ponytail.

I think 15/16 is about the age I'd be ok with pro highlights.

I started getting pro highlights at 17.

PP above and my SIL used Sun In on her 7 year old DDs hair.

Predictable, unnatural orangey results but the start of creating a "mini teen" and ear piercing and teen clothes soon followed. Niece wore makeup in 6th grade...

15, when she had a job and was old enough to go 50/50 on the cost with us. We can easily afford to pay, but think that it’s important that she understands how much cost and maintenance are involved. - Signed, someone who gets their hair highlighted every 6 weeks.

We let our DD get her hair color done once when she was 10 a few summers ago when the blue hair was the thing. She got it right after school let out and by the time school started it looks like blond highlights that then grew out. It's all grown out now. It was a one time treat for fun. We don't do nails or anything else and I wouldn't do it regularly. When she's in HS I would pay for hair.

I think it’s crazy and my daughter is 13 and won’t do highlights- too young to start the southern trend of spending all your time and money solely on artificial beauty. Once she’s in high school, I’ll probably give in- but not junior high.
Allowed nails once for special event and we did dip which is like gel- not fake nails with 2 week fills. That also kills your real nails- which is why I only allowed for special occasion.
But have to look at the example you set.

Let them be natural - But then I don’t have fake boobs and Botox which is about as common down here as the carpool lane.... again, in high school- probably will allow these necessary evils.

That is insane. I don’t know any MS or younger child getting their nails done.

But Botox and implants are common here too. I know many frump natural women by DCUM standards who regularly go for Botox. I’m one of them. I never wear make up but I’m not missing those injections.

Pretty sad. Shaved bushes, acrylic nails, highlights and a middle schooler?? Sad sad

I wouldn’t have a major objection starting in high school except that you can’t put that genie back in the bottle and it’s expensive to maintain from age 14 on!

My mom let me use Sun In sometime in elementary school and I wore make up in 6th grade. Multiple piercings were in style and I got my ears done again in middle school. I also used a lot of Aquanet and had a huge perm. I don’t wear any make up or jewelry now as an adult and I don’t highlight my hair. I also don’t use a ton of hairspray anymore. It’s okay. Your teen will change a lot before now and when she’s an adult.

19. Paid once at expensive salon. Will not pay again. But I was lousy at teaching fashion and make up, so thought she was due one professional job. Did my own highlights for years. Too lazy now.
