16. I paid for it. |
I put lemon juice and peroxide on my sister’s hair and had her sit in the sun. She was six. |
Starting at 10 or 11. I paid for it. |
DD is 12 and has started asking. Will probably allow next year. I will pay for it. |
High school |
She was 12 and I did them at home and they came out great. She has since asked for them two more times. If your child has light brown hair, the box kits are super easy. I think darker hair is a lot harder. |
I paid for it as a HS graduation present. |
For her birthday I let my 10 year old do purple streaks that washed out after a few months.
highlights in the traditional sense that require maintenance every 6-8 weeks? That is an expense I would expect her to cover once she had a job. |
I’m so grateful I have low maintenance kids! This hasn’t ever come up and my oldests are 21 and 19! |
My mother was a genuine frump. I never really learned how to have a conversation with anyone at the beauty salon, what to ask for. I made sure to take my girls to have their eyebrows waxed beginning in high school because I wanted them to be able to ask for services, etc. when they were in college. I also took them for pedicures and manicures so that they would feel comfortable getting these services if they went to a formal or something in college. I know I'm going to get negative feedback for this -- but how I wish someone had done these things with me, including high lights, when I was in high school. I was too shy and lacking in knowledge to ever be able to do these things in college. I was such a dork and having a frumpy mom didn't help! |
I remember plenty of friends with highlights or dyed hair in high school, probably starting around 15 or 16. I wouldn't be opposed to my DD doing it, but I'm not paying for that kind of maintenance. She would have to use her own money. |
This. Older than 18 and making enough money that she can pay for it herself. No way am I paying for some teen to get her hair highlighted. And it’s not even healthy. These responses on here are insane. |
12, I pay for it. She dyes her head random colors and cut it in funky ways. It's just hair, it grows back. Her current thought is a very short almost buzz cut. It's a step up from her desire to shave it all off for summer. My only word of caution to her is that if she cuts it that short it will grow back quickly and be itchy. She's the one that has to live with it.
Her hair dresser is wonderful and for the most part knows anything goes with me. However she will usually call me and ask if it's okay to dye bright pink or shave a side. |
Never. It has harmful chemicals and damages hair. I won’t consent to that whether she wants to pay or not. Plus expensive and time consuming. I’m not driving and waiting hours for her to get highlights.
When she is 18+ and responsible for her own expenses, transportation, etc. she can get the done if she wants |
Really shocked by all the people letting 10-13 yr olds get this done, yikes! |
