40 yr old Kim Kardashian fails first year legal test

I know a guy who got a perfect score on the multistage portion fo the CA bar exam. In law school, he was best known for hitting on underage women, coming to class late, and watching porn on his laptop in full view of other people. He was one of those people who benefited heavily from the law school grading curve, because it prevented him from failing out of school (it's hard to get an A but it's also hard to get a D or even a C -- almost everyone gets some form of B). But he had a great short term memory, put in a month of concerted effort on studying for the multiple choice section of the exam, and he got every single question right. If you asked me if I thought that guy was smart, I'd say no, but the bar isn't really about "smart". Yes, the essay portions are more challenging and I'm sure he didn't do as well on them, but he passed the bar on the first try, in large part because of his very high multistage score.

Meanwhile, I studied for the CA bar with one of my closest friends who had a 9th Circuit clerkship (which if you know, you know) and she failed on her first try. She was super stressed out and overthought it and I think anxious about her clerkship. She passed no problem the second time but it sucked because she had to study while clerking and everyone she knew had already passed. She's one of the smartest people I know in the law and has had a great career.

The bar isn't about smart v. dumb. It's a standardized test. Smart people fail it and dumb people pass it and everyone has different strengths and the bar only tests very specific skill sets. Kim failing the baby bar isn't really evidence one way or another of anything. I do think it's a more interesting choice than most of her other endeavors, especially because it seems driven by both her interest in criminal justice and her dad.

I agree with this so much. Total law school flunkies that survived the bar exam, and really smart diligent people who didn't pass on their first try...I don't judge anyone for not passing the first time.

This is not the bar exam they took. This is the “baby bar”.

I guess she failed again. I’ve got to admire her persistence and willingness to challenge herself.

She’s been out of school for thirty years. I agree that she probably isn’t dumb (I personally do not think she’s particularly smart) but test taking is a skill and it is one she hasn’t used in a very long time. I highly doubt she will pass.

Jonathan is on Wendy today and he said Kim is currently studying to re-take the test.

+1 Yeah good for her. I've never seen an episode of the Kardashians but I admire her for trying to pursue a different career and being honest about her struggles.

She didn’t do too bad considering the CA bar exam is the hardest in the nation.

She got like a 474 and it’s a 520 to pass? She did that while managing multiple businesses, four kids during a pandemic, and a divorce from a husband going through a mental breakdown.

Why does the internet say 280 is a pass?

What Is Considered A Good Bar Exam Score?
While your UBE should clearly state if you passed or failed, a score of 280 is a passing score in every state. The lowest possible passing score of 266 will suffice in states like South Carolina, New York, New Jersey, Montana, and some others.

Depending on how many people have taken the UBE, a score of 280 is approximately the 73rd percentile, a 300 is in about the 90th, and 330 is in the top 1% of all scores.

Two more years to go, then the real bar. Good luck!

Good for her. I’m not saying we should admire their family choices or values but I don’t think she is dumb. Both her parents were/are pretty smart.

But this was not the actual "CA Bar exam." It was some "baby Bar exam" for people who have studied the law for one year. The "real" Bar exam is a comprehensive exam taken after someone has earned an entire law degree She is only on year one.

I'm a lawyer, and passed the bar on the first try. Please don't look at my 1L year grades. Ouch.
