Do you care what time your teen wakes up on weekends?

I let my son stay up later on weekends but he goes to bed by 11:30 or so. He regularly sleeps until noon. Teenagers are like babies. They are growing a lot! That requires tons of sleep (and food!)

...and they do best on a routine/schedule. Don't know why you think they don't.

My baby was on his own schedule until about a year or so. Why are DCUMs so controlling?

Sorry you were a slave to your baby. I hope, at some point, you were able to implement a routine, not to be controlling because everyone does better when they know what to expect.

Oh please. I'm glad your nanny got your baby on a schedule so you could visit with them once a day. Most parents actually raise their own children and give them what they need when they need it. Sleeping and eating is a baby's only job so they can grow and develop.

She had this policy even on the summers I spent at her house while I was in college. I was always a good daughter, student and did all the chores she wanted, so it was ridiculous that I couldn't sleep in on the weekend. In high school, I had to be at the bus stop at 5:55 am and always felt sleep deprived no matter what I did.

Was she a monster in other ways? It’s hard to picture someone who would do this as being a nice person the rest of the time. Were naps allowed?

She was nice in other ways and we are very close now. She just couldn’t stand laziness. I inherited that and hate it too, but really I’m a hard worker. I couldn’t study for exams until I finished my chores too and they were extensive. I think it wasn’t until college that I felt well rested. Naps? You seriously think she’d allow naps?! Ha

I think 11am would be reasonable on weekends.

We only wake if there is a sport or other reason. On sundays he can sleep til whenever (although it’s mostly not past 11).

Why is your teen going to bed at 11? Bedtime for us has always been 7:30. Won’t change unless there is a lot of homework. Typically only a few times a year it has to be later because of homework.

Your TEEN goes to bed at 7:30?

Yes he is 13 and bedtime will always be 7:30

Will you not allow him to participate in anything in high school — sports? Clubs? Social events?

Yes he is 13 and bedtime will always be 7:30

This is the craziest thing I've ever read on this site.

You are going to make a 17 year old go to bed at 7:30? How is that going to work?

OK, the 7:30 bedtime lady is plain crazy, but do you guys think your teens are actually sleeping 14 hours a day?

Some days.

M-F it's 11pm-6am or 7am, that is only 7-8 hours... so yes on the weekend they sleep 12-12 and then a nap during the day.

My mom used to wake me up before 8 am on Sundays. It was my only day off as I went to two schools. Grammar schools and the music school. Both were proper HS in my country and each had around 7 subjects. I would go in the morning to grammar school and then in the afternoon to music school. I also had a piano to practice for hours, homework for both. These were the best schools in my home country.
On top of it, I was and am an insomniac so I would take hours to fall asleep.
She was insisting that the house must be cleaned by 10 am. I begged her to let me wake up at 9 and that I would vacuum and clean everything just the same. Nope.
She always let my younger sister get out of it and as soon as sister complained chores were assigned to me.
I am 50 and while my relationship with my mom is pretty good now (it wasn't always, during her menopause I was her scapegoat and she was just evil towards me) as you can tell I am still upset about this.

As the mom of a "best case scenario" toddler who always sleeps til 6:45 am and sometimes sleeps til 8:00-8:30....I cannot imagine I'd ever object to a late sleeping teen!!!

Sleeping is not being lazy. If they're sleeping it's because their body needs it. My DH used to get annoyed if I wasn't out of bed by 6:30, not realizing I actually need 8 hours of sleep. I'm not being lazy getting up at 7, you d!ck. I'm exhausted from years of sleep deprivation so suck it.

They are sleeping in because they are going to bed at 2am (or 3am, 4am...). If they went to bed earlier, then they wouldn't need to sleep until 1pm.

Are all of the "wake the teen up on weekends" people the same ones who call their kids at college to wake them up so they won't be late for the classes their parents chose for them? When does the micromanaging end?
Anonymous
Yes, but only because it messed up he meal schedule for the day. He'll roll out of bed around 1, then want breakfast/lunch/dinner by that time table.
