I don’t understand parents taking unmasked children out

He is being protected by you wearing a mask. He is also putting you at risk if he has COVID. Hopefully you are staying away from this unmasked infants.

If you are sick stay home. Asymptomatic transmission is highly unlikely. The effect size of non medical masks is small. Show me data that proves a one year old is safer in a mask at a store, compared to in a store without a mask. And I don’t believe that a one year old, unmasked with no Covid symptoms, is putting others at risk any more than a masked adult without Covid symptoms.

Maybe she needed something (like food items you can't order for curbside) and had nobody else to take care of her kids? I mean, I am lucky my husband and I can divide and conquer so our kids don't go into stores, but i can EASILY think of reasons someone might take them in. Did you try?

Are you really that dence? You’re missing the point. She can mask up her kids!

Are you really that dense that you think masking makes kids safe?

“The evidence regarding the effectiveness of medical face masks for the prevention of COVID-19 in the community is compatible with a small to moderate protective effect, but there are still significant uncertainties about the size of this effect. Evidence for the effectiveness of non-medical face masks, face shields/visors and respirators in the community is scarce and of very low certainty.”

Even worse, some think they can put one on to protect others if they are sick....

I appreciate this post SO much. When will people stop thinking masks are these magical covid barriers??

Please continue to shelter in place forever. Please.

Lol. I’m not a shelter in place type. I’m a masks outside are stupid type. But good job trotting out the old “hide in your basement forever” trope. Even I don’t do that. I feel bad for people who struggle to understand statistics and basic science, they must be very, very afraid if all they are reading is the dire mainstream media constantly reminding everyone to PANIC!!

Yes. Unfortunately, the pandemic has taught me that people in DC are educated, not smart. And a lot of people here need to consider taking meds for their anxiety.

DP. I also think we have spent way too much time on this stupid mask debate, and not enough time talking about how to actually stay safe. It’s at the point where people think as long as they mask, they can be indoors with anyone for however long they want.

The pandemic has really provided myriad novel ways for nosy nancies to judge everyone else. (Apologies to women actually named Nancy.)

Get a hobby, OP.

What’s shocking is all the sheeple wearing masks while walking in the middle of a deserted street. Mask in stores; mask when packed tight. Everything else is virtue-signaling BS. Masking outside with no one around is lunacy, people; you’re doing it either for “Covid theatre” reasons, or to make yourself feel superior.

Thank you!!! I agree with you! I used to run in rock creek park massless... I was always alone and very rarely saw anyone. Once a woman started screaming at me to wear a mask... she scared me. Now I feel I have to bandana and pull it up when I see someone from the distance. It’s lunacy and bad science! On top of that, I am also vaccinated so I am really not putting anyone at risk...

I think it's great people who don't wear masks, and don't have their kids wear masks, are willing to take one for the team and increase herd immunity.

People who are going out may contribute to herd immunity whether or not they are masked. Covid has spread through many populations of essential workers with mask mandates in place.

I am tempted to take my unmasked toddler & my masked 4 year old to shop and go to anywhere because I feel they have missed so much things for a full year. My unmasked toddler is curious but scared of outside world and people. My masked 4 year old misses the pre-covid fun kid & family activities, but at least he gets to hang out with other kids at daycare. We are sending the toddler to daycare this summer. Life needs to move on, and i have seen so many kids in the supermarket masked and I am tempted to take my masked 4 year old out there as well.

And the next paragraph, right there
“ Although the evidence for the use of medical face masks in the community to prevent COVID-19 is limited, face masks should be considered as a non-pharmaceutical intervention in combination with other measures as part of efforts to control the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Limited evidence means there are few studies on the topic, not that masks don't work.

If you cherry-pick anything, you'll get the evidence you want.

Shame on you.

I do. not. know. But I will call them out.

From the same article:

“The use of face masks in the community should complement and not replace other preventive measures such as physical distancing, staying home when ill, teleworking if possible, respiratory etiquette, meticulous hand hygiene and avoiding touching the face, nose, eyes and mouth.

The appropriate use of face masks and promoting compliance with their use when recommended as public health measures are key to the effectiveness of the measure and can be improved through education campaigns“

Yes, and?

And you misrepresented the point of the ecdc article.

They admit that masks work and recommend people masking up in addition to following other guidelines.

Have mask mandates led to a drop in cases? Have states with mask mandates had better outcomes? Why do you think a non medical mask keeps you safe?
