Private & Independent Schools
| That is not true. A thoughtful, more academically inclined boy would do great, IF, he likes to get outside and be active. Doesn't have to be a jock, but the school believes (as do I) that regular physical activity is good for boys and encourages everyone to find something they like to do. They don't have to be a star. I personally know of a couple of boys who are just OK or not great at sports, but are really into science or music, and they seem to be enjoying themselves. But if you hate to get outside and move? Probably not the place for you. And as for the cheating scandal, some of you need to move on. I wouldn't judge Churchill on one scandal, so why judge Landon? In my opinion, kids that cheat and misbehave are generally coming from homes where that behavior is tolerated. A couple years ago, some girls were suspended from Sidwell for some really appalling behaavior. That doesn't mean the school encourages it. |

Well said 15:47. The statement by 15:34 was just ridiculous. Some of the negative comments by posters on this thread without any substantiation, makes you wonder if their kids didn't get accepted or can't hang.
|
| Churchhill is dealing with the cheating in a very decisive manner. They don't seem to be trying to gloss over it. |
| To respond to the original question in this string....the lower school is great. Focus on diversity and inclusion. No personal experience with the upper school, but have heard consistently great things about the lower school. |
| PP How is churchill dealing decisivly with their cheating scandal? Two of the boys withdrew and are finishing their degrees at MCC. Many of my Churchill friends are complaining that MC has brushed this under the wrong as to not damage the churchill reputation and that the cheating scandal may be deeper and have gone on longer than they realized. This would mean kids in college would be affected. |
| PP 15:47 I think You've summed it all up. This is the attitude that makes people run from Landon. |
| PP what attitude did 15:47 imply that makes people want to run from Landon? The fact that if they don't want to move? I think the poster gave a fair assessment that if you truly hate doing any sports, not the school for you. Just as GDS or Maret are not really good schools for kids who truly love athletics. That does not mean they are not good schools. Just not a right fit. But an attitude. Please just stop using any fair posting to bash Landon. |
| PP, I have nothing to say about Landon; don't know that much about it. But your statement that GDS and Maret are not good schools for kids who truly love athletics is not correct - at least as far as Maret is concerned. Maret has many excellent athletes who go on to play in college and many outstanding teams that have done extremely well in their leagues. |
Could you please elaborate on what you mean about the MS and HS being "different" from the LS? |
|
LS is (was?) very well run. The teachers knew the boys and understood what went on within the lower school. The teachers worked well together. MS is not managed. The teacher/coach model is heavy on the coach. Several of those coaches (not really teachers) are not worth the tuition.
One was kicked up to HS when so many parents complained. MS head does not act on problems and needs to be fired. He doesn't pay attention to most of the boys and has very poor response with parent questions and concerns. He is defensive and dismissive. By the time some of the probloem boys get to HS, they are quite out of hand. HS head is trying to manage all sorts of issues by the time those kids arrive, along with the regular concerns that high school brings. He is left with one nasty load by the time he gets the kids. |

Can someone explain what happens between Landon Lower School and Middle School? If LS is so wonderful (and I have no reason to doubt it is), works so well and has mostly great boys, what happens to these boys in MS? Do "good boys" actually leave Landon when they graduate from LS and go elsewhere (where?) for MS? And does another sort of boys enroll in Landon for MS/HS? It cannot be just a different style/ability of school management that turns the great LS boys into something much different in MS/HS. Insiders -- please explain! |
| we hatedlLS. Many of the boys that left after 5th grade left for academic reasons. they could not cut it. MS has been so much better. Kids have responsibilities academically and if they don't perform, they will not make it. The LS school headmaster is a 60's throwback who believes in lots of chances for everyone who messes up and this lead to a lot of behavior issues. Academically, MS is much better. Thank god is he retiring. |
| I guess 11:12 was written by a Landon LSer. |
| Let's call this Exhibit B. |
Everything about this post is absolutely false. |
